I really liked the idea of a built-in balaclava/buff and breathing hole in a base layer top for snow camping and alpine climbing--especially as pj's inside a sleeping bag. Unfortunately, the airhole on the top I got was to the left of my mouth. Additionally, there's a nose tip sewn into the seam binding above the airhole, presumably to make the balaclava hook onto your nose to keep it in place, but this was also not centered and was almost an inch to the left of my nose.
As for the sleeves, they are super long and the thumb holes went past the tips of my thumbs. I have pretty long arms for a short person and most technical clothing in regular sizing (not petite) fit my arms without issue, but this base layer top has significantly longer sleeves. The torso is also super long , falling 4-5 inches below my groin.
Additionally, the printed logos are substantial and quite heavy and add to the weight and bulk of this base layer top. It makes the fabric less pliable and less packable, so even if the airhole and nose tip were placed correctly in the center, it would not be practical for backcountry activities. It could work for less technical activities--like at a ski lodge, but this is assuming the airhole and nose tip are centered correctly.
Based on failing to deliver a functioning airhole, superfluous logo design that adds weight and bulk and poor fit, I would not recommend the 686 Airhole Thermal Bala Base Layer Top.
