It all began one day in 1774 when a German cobbler named Johann Birkenstock registered as "shoemaker" and sparked a family tradition that would come to change the shoe industry forever. One hundred years later, Konrad Birkenstock invented the contoured cork and latex foot bed, the first to follow the natural shape of the foot.
