By The Observer from Ottawa, Canada on 10/26/2009 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable, Good Cut, Warm Best Uses: Bad Weather, Daily Use Describe Yourself: Classic Dresser Sizing: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The coat is very roomy, which is why I got it as I plan to use it as a winter overcoat. I have the beige whip and love it! I'm debating adding a thin lining to it around the shoulders as I have some textured sports jackets that might get worn from contact with the heavy wool. I'm looking forward to a long term relationship with this coat and couldn't be more pleased with the purchase!
Excellent quality example By JIM of NYC from Queens, NY on 09/04/2009 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Durable, Good Cut, Warm Best Uses: Bad Weather, Daily Use, Going Out Describe Yourself: Casual Dresser Sizing: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This coat was more than I expected. I returned it because size 40 did not fit my size 42 frame. Taking the advice of others I ordered one size smaller but as I have come to learn such advice is not always universally applicable. It wasn't for me in this case. Size 40 was an uncomfortable fit across my back; the sleeves were about 1" too short. I had on only a shirt underneath.(I am avg built, 6', 185Lbs). I did not re-order size 42 because the coat was much too hi-end a garment for the purpose I intended it for, i.e., a plain old knock-around coat for everyday grab and go in very cold weather when I don't want to grab a sweater as well. It would have worked as such I have no doubt, however, I instead replaced the Chrysalis with the less costly Gloverall Duffle (#41256 in size 42) and my needs were exactly fulfilled. Though high in quality, the Gloverall is not "high-ended" like the Chrysalis. I now have a sturdy, well constructed cold weather garment that I wouldn't mind having on some cold night, stuck on the side of the road, when I have to look under my car's hood or change a tire. If you want a warm, going to church or semi-formal office coat, on the other hand, I highly recommend the Chrysalis. As for the sizing to pick, I'd say pick what you normally wear and go from there, maybe one size up if you're wearing a heavy suit jacket. It's not over sized in my experience. Good Luck-Cheers!
By Nicknameless from Wisconsin on 08/25/2009 Pros: Attractive Design, Warm Sizing: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Four stars because I reserve five stars for perfection, i.e., pretty much never. The coat came yesterday and I'm happy with it. It will be my main winter coat for the next few years. Compared with similar coats from the likes of L.L. Bean and Land's End, this one is made of a much heavier, higher-quality, better-draping grade of wool, and the workmanship is superior. You could wear this coat over a suit or sport coat, though of course it isn't a classic open-necked topcoat. It's just a sharp coat for general use. In my case it's replacing my much-loved Filson double Mackinaw, and I don't feel the worse for it. Additional observations: 1. The coat is true to size. I'm a 40 regular in a suit, somewhat broad-shouldered for a 40, and in this coat the 40 fits me fine. The fit feels like a true 40 in the shoulders and sleeves but the cut is generous in the torso, not at all tapered, more like a 41 or 42 down the body. This roominess in the body might be great if want to wear a sport coat, sweater, or vest under the coat or if you carry a little weight around the middle. I'm pretty slim, and I'm fine with the fit, but it is rather roomy. Order your true size and the cut will be forgiving even if you have a some bulk in the belly. 2. The back (not pictured here) looks great. The attached shoulder yoke (the doubling of the fabric over the top) squares off nicely in the back, fully sewn down, not vented like some. 3. There really are just two pockets, the ones you see in the picture. No interior pockets, no hand-warming pockets. I'm fine with that; others might not like it. 4. I like the lack of lining in the coat body. It's roomy enough that the lining isn't needed. 5. The color I ordered, "beige whip," is a very nicely tweedy khaki green, a sort of tweedy combination of beige and old-fashioned army green. I love the color. The darker green looks great too, at least in the pictures.
By Jason the duck-hunting baseball fanatic from Denver, CO on 04/27/2009 Pros: Attractive Design, Quality tailoring, Warm Best Uses: Daily Use, Going Out Describe Yourself: Classic Dresser Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Bottom line first: this is a finely tailored coat but a bit too large/bulky. As other reviewers have posted, it may be best to order a size smaller. I generally wear a 43 or 44 in suits and ended up ordering this coat in a 42 and it fits fine. As also previously mentioned, this coat is unlined except for the sleeves. This coat is very warm, and although I just purchased it, it appears to be a top-quality coat. The seems are impeccably sewn and even from a distance this gives the appearance of a finely crafted tweed outerwear coat. The shape is somewhat bulky (thus would make an excellent jacket if wearing large sweaters underneath or if the wearer was a bit on the portly). By bulky, I mean to say that it is not a slimming or narrow fit through the midsection. I am very seriously considering having a center seam adjustment to bring it in to give a more tailored appearance. For the bargain price available here at STP, the cost of tailoring would still make this quite a deal. The coat fits me perfectly in the shoulders, armpits, and sleeve. It is a particularly warm coat. This is my only topcoat & I intend to wear this to church, performing arts events, nice dinners, and the few instances I find myself in need of a overcoat for a suit. I would definately reccomend this and were it not for the oversized/bulky fit, I would have rated it 5 stars.
I'm very happy with the duffel. By Haasje from Malden The Netherlands on 12/24/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Comfortable, Warm Describe Yourself: Casual Dresser Sleeve Length: Feels too short Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use the duffel duffel and I haven't not cold anymore.
By alex from Portland OR on 12/03/2008 Describe Yourself: Trendy/Stylish Dresser Sizing: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: wonderful coat = I wasn't going to order this since they stop at size 44 and I normally wear a 46 -- but since coats run big sometimes, I took a chance on a 44 -- I got it and it fits excellent and is a joy to wear -- this is the real deal. I think the more people wear quality products like this -- the more we will realize that the stuff from [...] just isn't worth your time. I plan to keep this coat for the rest of my life.

I saw a very similar one in the men's dept.of one of New York's best department stores a year or so ago. It was very expensive.

Exactly what I thought I was buying By E. from New York City on 09/19/2008 Pros: Attractive Design, Warm Describe Yourself: Casual Dresser Sizing: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Looks really nice and the cut is very true to size. Very well-made. I'm a 40 chest and the 40 in this coat with either a t-shirt or thin sweater fits just right, but has room for a thicker sweater. The only thing I don't like, and I did know this when I bought it, is that it is unlined (except the sleeves). That said, the material is heavy (about LL. Bean wool blanket weight heavy) and not itchy.
