Just about perfect
By PokeyVerified Reviewer from Truckee, CA on 06/21/2009
Pros:
Arch Support, Breathable, Comfortable/No Break-In, Dries Quickly, Great Traction
Best Uses:
Mixed Terrain, Rocky/Unstable Terrain
Describe Yourself:
Competitive Athlete
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
This is the best trail shoe I've had for over 10 years. Why is it so hard for shoe companies to figure out that a narrow tread is what is needed for serious off-road running? This shoe has it, which translates into easy foot placement in even the rockiest terrain. The tread itself is very aggressive, with raised rubber cleat-type studs instead of silly grooves, meaning sure-footed holding power, especially coming downhill. Best of all, this shoe conformed perfectly to my foot from the get-go, with lots of extra fill around the opening so dirt doesn't get in so much. Finally, the lacing is well thought out, with lots of options for different patterns, and laces that stay tied. I bought a second pair the day after my first run in these. Maybe I should buy a third...

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
This is my first pair of Montrails. I was impressed the moment i put them on. I am a road runner adding trail runs to my mix, and these felt great. They feel narrow, (and I have very narrow feet)there was some rubbing on the pinky toe the first time out. I suppose they were stiff, but doing 5 miles the first run on shoes is not a good idea. This is a great deal for trail running shoes. The soles will get clogged on mud! They also have a bright orange side that prevents them from being street shoes, unless you want to look weird

Comfortable, but bottom wears fast
By Rael64 from Mississippi on 02/24/2009
Pros:
Comfortable, Good Traction, Lightweight, Nicely breathable
Cons:
Wears Quickly
Best Uses:
Non-pavement use
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Arch Type:
Low Arch
Sizing:
Feels true to size
Width:
Feels true to width
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
Overall, the shoe is great: fit, comfort, stability, breathability, and of course, price. Nonetheless, the 'cleats' on the bottom wear really fast, and this is what makes it average, at best. Granted, I wore my pair quite frequently and I walk most everywhere, so your milage may vary. I'd imagine the shoe would be great for off-road running as the traction is pretty good, but it may be a bit too soft for some.

Not for the long haul
By MO Adventure from Springfield, MO on 01/02/2009
Pros:
Good Traction, Lightweight
Cons:
Too firm, Uncomfortable
Best Uses:
Mixed Terrain
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Arch Type:
Low Arch
Sizing:
Feels half size too small
Width:
Feels true to width
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
These shoes are fairly comfortable...for a couple of miles. They do have a very narrow profile, but they don't seem to fit as narrow as they look. However, the narrow profile can lead to rolling ankles if you're careless about foot placement. The midsole is firm enough that the soles fo my feet begin to hurt after anything more than 3 miles, even on relatively soft, smooth trails. If you're looking for a shoe for short trail runs and races up to 5K, you might be in luck. If you regularly run longer, look elsewhere.

Comfy, good support, narrow toe box
By Outdoor CanuckVerified Reviewer from Front Range, Colorado on 12/05/2008
Pros:
Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Shock-Absorbent
Cons:
Narrow toe box, Not Water Resistant
Best Uses:
All Weather Conditions, Everyday, Grass, Mixed Terrain, Muddy Conditions, Rocky/Unstable Terrain
Describe Yourself:
Trail Jogger
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
I love Montrails despite their chronic misleading sizes. I am on my second pair of Hurricaines and I had to go a full size larger. The highlander fits completely different, I only went up a half size. The length is fine but if you have flippers for feet then you can count on some pinching until they wear in. My Hurricaines have a super wide heel to plant on uneven ground compared to these, yet they feel quite stable.

I use them for rough, rocky hiking. The traction they provide is excellent. They are comfortable with moderate arch support. They are well made but they are truly TOO narrow at the toe box. I don't have wide feet.

Best Uses:
Everyday, Mixed Terrain, Paved Trails

Very comfortable the first time on. I've been wearing them for a week with smart wool socks and they squeak with every step. Not really annoying unless I'm in the library.

Not Salomons, but very good.
By Number 74Verified Reviewer from Portland, Oregon on 10/10/2008
Pros:
Breathable, Comfortable/No Break-In, Durable, Great Traction
Cons:
Not for pavement
Best Uses:
All Weather Conditions, Grass, Mixed Terrain, Muddy Conditions, Rocky/Unstable Terrain
Describe Yourself:
Competitive Athlete, Trail Jogger
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
I'm a mid-distance trail runner/scrambler who likes to get muddy and wet, and when I couldn't find the Salomons I wanted on sale, I picked up these "trail shoes", which are 3 oz. lighter than the Continental Divide "trail runners".(?) They are bulkier and heavier than most Salomon trail runners, but will probably last longer. They don't dry super-quick, but the tread, flexibility, and toebox work for me, and they fit my narrowish foot well. I'll get the Salomons come race season, but these will work great for winter training in the woods. I get the feeling the treads would wear down very quickly on pavement, so I wouldn't recommend these as all-around shoes at all.

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:

Comments:
Great shoe! Have a narrow-ish foot and found this shoe fits very well is supportive and has GREAT heel stability. Only negative is the padding and fabic do not allow for quick drying. I found the Solomon XA Pro have too soft a foot bed(running on gravel roads hurt). I've used these for everything from dog walking to 2 hour trail runs (main use) to lacrosse cleats on turf and hard summer fields. Love the shoe so much I'm buying my second pair (but they do last).
