By Lindsey from Durham, NC on 02/13/2009 Pros: Fun, Good Value, Tough Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The pack is easy to put on and stays very well balanced. It doesn't slide or chafe anywhere thus far. As per other reviews, it does run large. I have an 85 lb rottie mix and a medium fits him perfectly. This is a great pack and a great price at Sierra Trading Post as compared to other places I looked.
Great pack, at a great price. By Berner Lover from South Florida on 02/11/2009 Best Uses: Larger Pets, Travel Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: High quality pack, well designed. The pack is easy to put on and pack. Our one year old Bernese Mountain Dog accepted it right away. One thing...even though she weighs 80+ pounds, the medium size fits her. The large size would only be for thick bodied or overweight dogs. The pack weight is distributed evenly, she doesn't struggle with it at all. I do take it off periodically so that she doesn't get too hot. Berners are cold weather dogs, and we live in Florida.
By Koolaid from Carbondale, IL on 02/09/2009 Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Sizing seems to be all wrong. Medium is said to fit a dog with 24 to 36 inch girth. My 6 month old English setter mix has a 25 inch girth currently. So, I ordered the Medium assuming she will grow into it. Measuring from the bottom of the pack to the bottom of the opposite pack measures 25 inches. Therefore, on my pup it was buckle to buckle and still loose. The top (determining how low the packs hang) is not adjustable. This particular pack tore at the seam of one of the straps after only a very few uses with very little weight on mostly paved trails. If the pack fit better, I would be very pleased. I believe this may have been a defective pack and therefore am going to give it another try. Have returned for a replacement in the smaller size.
Happy with the pack overall. By Boyd the Scoutmaster from Levittown, PA on 01/19/2009 Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Bought the packs for a 70 pound Golden Retriever to take him backpacking with my sons. The pack appears well made overall. The straps have sleeves on them to prevent chaffing on the dogs chest and belly. It took several trial hikes to get the straps adjusted to the proper tension and tuck them into the sleeves so the entire thing rode properly. At first I didn't put any weight in them, thinking that would be better until the dog got use to them. I learned that putting 2-3 pounds in each pack pulled them down and helped stabalize them on the dog. The adjustment took several hikes, originally I was too loose, so they moved and chaffed some, but after adding the weight and tightening them up some they rode fine and we have had no chafing.
The elastic luggage strap on top was also an issue. The cinch was just behind the dogs head and the dangling ends seemed to annoy him. I pulled the cinch through the loops and moved it to the back of the pack and that took care of the issue.
We have been on a number of hikes and the packs are holding up well. Cleanup is just a dry brush to get mud off, goldens don't mind cold muddy water at all and even seen to enjoy it.
The dog loves them and gets excited when we get them out now.
Overall I am please with the packs and would reccommend them to others, just take the time to adjust them with a few pounds of weight in them.
By jolly roger from north GA on 01/14/2009 Pros: Good Value, Tough, Versatile Best Uses: Aussy, Travel, Younger Pets Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: looks great, tough enough for my curious australian shepard. Great size, good pocket divisions, love the out side mess pocket for bags of fecal matter.
the straps were a little long for the aussy.
Well made, great features. By Medium-core Backpacker from Kansas City on 01/13/2009 Pros: Good Value, Tough, Versatile Best Uses: Dogs, Not for cattle Describe Yourself: Long-time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This pack completely served its purpose. I purchased a medium for my 70lb. retriever mix. He is able to carry his own rations for a multi-day trip. It worked fantastically. The mesh pocket on top holds a leash, ball, and treats. The handle on the back came in very useful when we had to lift the dog up a small ridge (though I'm not sure how he felt about it). The construction seems pretty strong, and the lifetime warranty makes it worth it. I would certainly buy again.
By colorado from CO on 01/05/2009 Pros: Easily Cleaned, Easy To Assemble, Good Construction, Lightweight, Stows Easily Describe Yourself: Long-Time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This little pack is well made and sturdy. It has a good assortment of pockets.
It is a bit small for our small, thin golden retriever but manages to fit her. The con for us is that the overall volume is small; she won't be able to carry much in it. Two water bottles, a collapsible dish or two, a small amount of dogfood. I've seen other packs for dogs her size that are roomier.
Solid Pack for larger Dogs By eric the Lab trainer from Lone Tree Colorado on 12/30/2008 Pros: Easy To Assemble, Good Construction, Lightweight, Stows Easily Describe Yourself: Professional Pet Trainer Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Well constructed but would like to see better padding at strap contacts and wider chest pad.
This pack holds a lot of stuff By Boots from Virginia on 12/27/2008 Pros: Easily Cleaned, Easy To Assemble, Good Construction, Lightweight, Stows Easily Describe Yourself: Long-Time Pet Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This pack is well made to balance the load and easy to put on and take off. This is the best pack I've ever had for my dog. The pockets are very roomy, great for carrying more stuff. The more my dog can carry the less I have to.
