Neither of these negatively affected my perception of the shirt. It is very well made and exactly the color I was looking for.

The top looks great without the tie. I have a small waist, and the top is nicely fitted to draw attention to my waist. Also can be opened to draw attention to neck and chest. Bottom line: this top works for both the office and a fun night out.
