These shoes are a wonderful combination of stuffy conservative predicatability monk-strapped into stylish liberal "loungeware". A wondful, oxmorinic icon well added to any thinking man's high-end wardrobe. Chicks dig 'em, too.
By Quality and Style: Inseparable from Boston on 11/22/2008 Best Uses: Casual Wear, Going Out Describe Yourself: Comfort-oriented, High-end shopper, Quality-conscious Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: I've been looking for a nice pair of monk strap shoes for a while and thought I had found them (I really wanted the handmade Sutor Mantellassis, but wasn't prepared to spend $800 for shoes at STP). I bought a pair of Allen-Edmonds lower end shoes a year ago (Commuters) and was not thrilled, but thought that with these, I was into their high end, supposedly among the best American shoes. What a disappointment. First, they simply didn't fit properly; I virtually never have a problem with 13 medium, but these were too narrow (the leather is soft, so they would have easily broken in, but then wouldn't have looked good) and very long; nothing in the description pointed this out. Also, the shoes look nothing like the beautiful high-gloss burnished brown in the picture; the color is quite a bit lighter, more tan, and the finish is dull. Finally, the quality of the leather and the structure of the shoe were surprisingly mediocre. Perhaps I'm spoiled by my Alden shell cordovan oxfords, but I've had lots of shoes in this general price class (Bally Suisse, for example) and lower that have been considerably better quality. I haven't tried out the leading English shoemakers yet (nor, alas, Sutor Mantellassi -- someone bought that last pair of 13's), but my Aldens are superb shoes. I don't know about Alden's non-shell-cordovan shoes, but I can definitely recommend against these Allen-Edmonds. Now I'm twice burned by their products and won't try them again. It's Alden's for me, or perhaps an excursion to England...
