I live in Alaska, where the surfaces I run upon are frozen over for several months of the year. I have tried running with various cleats and grippers that slip onto my regular running shoes. I have even screwed machine screws into the soles of my shoes trying to improve traction. These Icebugs are outstanding. They allow me to run on icy roads, frozen trails, even frozen puddles and overflow with utter confidence.
I have not been this happy with a new pair of shoes in I don't know how long. I cannot attest to durability, as I've only had them a couple of weeks. I have done a 10-mile and a 12-mile run in them, and they have remained comfortable for the long haul.
Great product. I bought two. By Don from Aspen, Co. on 01/12/2009 Pros: Buy 12 size larger, Comfortable, Great Traction Describe Yourself: Outdoor Professional Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I live in Aspen, Co. Lots of icey streets. This product keeps me safe for sure. I bought two pair, just to have an extra when the first one wears out. Ordering it 1/2 size larger is correct, as they run small. I've told friends about the Icebugs. At least one has ordered from you. Don
Sounds crazy but it works. By Avid Dog Walker from New hampshire on 01/12/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Stable Best Uses: Backcountry, Cold weather, Day hikes Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I hike with the dog twice a day, every day for about 5 miles total. The Icebugs are outstanding on all slippery conditions. Much better than the clip on stablizers.
Best winter runners ever... By Eric from Milwaukee, WI on 01/11/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Great Traction, Stable Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought these from Sierra as a test to see how they work after being sidelined by glare ice on sidewalks. Went for a run the day after I got them and was addicted. The traction on ice/packed snow is the best. They fit and have the same comfort as my regular New Balance runners. The below reviewer noted they are not waterproof, but I haven't had a problem with that, as I don't typically run the day after a big dump of snow and wait for the majority of snow to be plowed/cleared. I haven't had an issue with my feet getting wet. They stay warm and dry throughout my run.
Excellent traction on ice & packed snow By Man in the Middle from Chicago IL on 12/20/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Great Traction, Stable Best Uses: Dry icy weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Turns out I needed the next size up for these so take Sierra's advice to add a half size seriously! I bought a waterproof version of this last year, and that's my only concern about this model. It doesn't appear to have any more water resistance than other running shoes, making it (like them) only suitable for dry days. On returning these, I switched to the similar model that is water-resistant and has gaiters to keep out snow. (See separate review.) I'm only not recommending this because I can't imagine needing studded shoes for icy conditions without also needing water resistance. Apart from that, they are very light and comfortable.
