As with many leather goods, it needs a bit of breaking in to soften.
Own a 50lb. Retriever/Chow mix and have never had a problem. Good length and feels sturdy.

The leather was a bit stiff and I wasn't too impressed with the hardware they used but as an everyday lead it would be fine for some.

In fact, it seems a bit unfinished. It's quite stiff, but will soften with time and use. The full retail price is way too high for a leash of this quality. The clasp is strong enough (I have 100 lb dogs and have no concerns about it's ability to hold) but it's just not great quality. It will do the job, but you wouldn't be heart-broken if it got lost. I feel fine about the price that I paid, but if it were anywhere close to retail, I'd be returning it immediately.

But the leather itself is rough, coarse -- not well tanned at all.
It is a tough, serviceable leash, and I'll keep and use it. But "high quality" leather it isn't, and that part of the product description should be changed.
