Great Shell for keeping Dogs' Body Dry By Thea the Crazy Dog Lady from Deep in the Green Mtns of VT on 11/17/2009 Pros: Easy to Put On, Good Quality Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Large Dogs, Outdoors Describe Yourself: Multiple Dog Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I have three large dogs, two German Shepherds and a Greyhound. Because the Grey needs cold/wet weather gear the GSDs do too, LOL! This fits the bill nicely. My big male Shep (105lb long coat GSD) has the 2XL size and it fits him perfectly. My other two dogs are a bit differently sized so their cots have needed some very slight and easy-to-do alterations; my 80lb retired racing Greyhound (he's a big boy for a Grey) just needed a couple of tucks at the end of his XL size coat to tighten it around his very slim waist, and my exceptionally deep-chested 75lb female GSD needed the 2XL with a couple of tucks done at the top of the coat to fit properly - she had the seemingly same measurements as my Grey, but the proportions were very different so I had to exchange the XL I originally got for her for the 2XL and alter it. This is not Columbia's fault! They've made an excellent shell for the average body dog; most GSDs or hunting breeds will fit it perfectly! I did end up keeping that 2nd XL size and have lined it with polar fleece to keep my Greyhound toasty as well as dry - unlike the GSDs for whom staying dry would be plenty even in the coldest weather, he needs that extra warmth layer. So if you sew and have a dog that may need something specialized this is a GREAT ready-made dog coat to work with! By health4you from Divide, CO on 11/17/2009 Pros: Good coverage, Prevents wet fur Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Outdoors Describe Yourself: Single Dog Owner Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This coat fits but is tight, it might be fine for a dog with a smooth coat but my dog seems to feel uncomfortable. I have put it on a few times for short periods but he shacks and seems restricted.
By LarryP from Loveland, CO on 11/17/2009 Describe Yourself: Multiple Dog Owner Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: In fitting the product we felt the size choices were limited. Our dog is 60 lbs average medium/large size dog. We bought the large which is a perfect fit in girth(no room for growth)and it is in my openion too short in back length.
We also feel the XL would have been way to big in girth.
Excellent quality and value By donnt from Kodiak, Alaska on 11/17/2009 Pros: Easy to Put On, Good Quality Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Large Dogs, Outdoors, Small Dogs Describe Yourself: Multiple Dog Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I've purchased 3 of these coats and am very satisfied with the features, quality and overall value. They keep my dogs warm and dry during the most inclement weather here in Kodiak, Alaska.
By MB from Kingston, NY on 11/16/2009 Pros: Cute, Easy to Put On, Fun, Good Quality Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Outdoors Describe Yourself: Multiple Dog Owner, New Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: It takes some getting used to, but it's a great jacket for wet, cold days. Very true to size, but large difference between sizes... one of my dogs is somewhere between the M and L, but the L is okay for her.
Good quality at a great price By Mary from Brooklyn NY on 11/16/2009 Pros: Cute, Easy to Put On, Good Quality, Washes Well Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Outdoors, Small Dogs Describe Yourself: Single Dog Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This dog coat fits well allowing for freedom of movement. It is great for repelling wind/rain, if your dog has a very thin coat you may need to layer it with a sweater for added warmth.
Great jacket very pleased By Earth Gurl from Walla Walla WA on 11/16/2009 Describe Yourself: Single Dog Owner Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I have a 45 lb. pit bull cross. She fits a large excellent through her chest, but around her tummy it is very very loose; so loose it looks odd. If it fit better there I would have given it 5 stars; however the shape of my dog is not the most usual, so it's ok!
We have mild winters here in Walla WAlla WA, but it is damp. My dog is an indoor dog and needs protection when we are out side after a big run. This is great because her tummy is covered and she will not get wet when she lays down or is out exploring. (We spend alot of time outside.) As it gets colder I'll put it on her when she runs and after the run I'll put a fleece sweater under it. It isn't the most warm jacket, but it is wind and water proof and just provides that needed protection from the elements. Actually I have a jacket much the same, waterproof, windproof with a light fleece lining, it is a great 3 season jacket; I anticipate this Alpine Adventure Dog Coat to be much the same.
She doesn't like wearing it, but it doesn't restrict her movement. When it is actually colder, she'll probably enjoy it more. She always seems embarrassed to have to wear a coat!:)
Well made coat, but odd dimensions By SouthernGirl from Middletown, CT on 11/16/2009 Pros: Cute, Easy to Put On, Good Quality Best Uses: Indoors, Outdoors Describe Yourself: Single Dog Owner Sizing: Feels full size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I purchased the 2XL for my greyhound, Largo, but have run into a few problems. First, the length is too short down his back. Although the coat says 30" L, and my greyhound is 31" L, the coat is easily 6" too short. His entire backside is exposed! Second, the chest is actually too large for him! I knew that would be a problem with the advertised measurements indicating a 42" chest and Largo has a 32" chest. It's a well quality coat, easy to zip closed and looks like it will wear as well as the Columbia coats and vests I own for myself. Due to the great price it is selling at, I'm going to keep the coat for those cold winter days when we're indoors and I can toss a blanket over his backside to keep that area warm, while the Columbia coat keeps his chest nice and cozy.
By In the Mountains from Show Low, AZ on 11/16/2009 Pros: Good Quality, Stays on, Washes Well Best Uses: Harsh Weather, Large Dogs, Outdoors Describe Yourself: Multiple Dog Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I love it, and so does my dog! My doberman is about 90 pounds, and after reading the reviews, I ordered the 2XL size. I was optimistic, so I ordered 2 - now I wish I had ordered 4. My dog has alopecia, and we live in the mountains. The jacket is perfect to help him regulate his body temperature during cold weather. I would say that if your dog is not well-trained this could be difficult to get on. We use it as an exercise in doggy patience, and everything else is so great that it is easily overlooked. So many other jackets that I have bought have strange collars or hoods attached or are very easily removed during play. This one is sleek and will stay on during most any actvities.
A must have, especially for a smaller do By greenmountaingirl from vermont on 11/15/2009 Best Uses: Outdoors, Small Dogs Describe Yourself: Single Dog Owner Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Great jacket. This jacket covers the whole body, not just their back. No more dragging in mud on her stomach.
