"The right jacket for the price" By John from Johnson City, TN on 12/13/2008 Pros: Breathable, Comfortable, Durable, Lightweight, Warm, Windproof Cons: Not Enough Pockets or Features Best Uses: Casual Wear, Cold Weather, Hiking and Camping, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I use this jacket mainly for casual wear and hiking in cold weather, and I bought it because it is breatheable, waterproof, and relatively lightweight. It is in fact all those things, and it fits well also. The only other things I wish it had were a couple more pockets and a couple of vents, but these are small complaint. An excellent value for the price.
By MacDaddy from Birmingham, AL on 12/13/2008 Best Uses: Biking, Casual Wear, Hiking and Camping Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: It's a good thing this coat has a removable liner because it's almost too warm for Alabama. As a three-in-one though it's really easy to change it to accommodate the temp.
Love it, not in the least dissapointed By kanemilo from Newland, NC on 12/08/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Lightweight, Warm Best Uses: Cold Weather, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Chest Size: Feels true to size Sleeve Length: Feels true to length Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I hike in the higher altitudes of the Southern Appalachains (5000ft.plus) and this coat is perfect for the high humidity cold and winds in our area. Love it.
By Jay from Chicago, Illinois on 12/07/2008 Pros: Breathable, Comfortable, Durable, Warm, Waterproof Best Uses: Casual Wear, Cold Weather, Hiking and Camping, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: First of all, it's best to think of this as getting a really nice fleece and a nice shell. It doesn't really make any sense to zip them together, and you lose some functionality when you do (for example, the inside pocket in the shell becomes inaccessible when you zip the fleece in.)
The fleece is warm to about 35-40 degrees with nothing but a teeshirt underneath. The shell is warm to about 35 degrees with only a teeshirt underneath. If you wear the fleece and shell together with a teeshirt underneath, it's warm into the 20s, and if you have an insulating base layer and replace the fleece with something thicker, it's warm probably to about 5 degrees.
The shell is windproof, which is very nice. It's hard to say how waterproof it is. You'll probably stay dry for snowsports, and it kept me dry during a drizzle (the water beaded beautifully), but I suspect that during a downpour you'd get a little bit wet.
It's probably overpriced at MSRP, but when I got mine STP had it way discounted and it was a great buy.
Four stars because the hood doesn't zip off and it's really uncomfortable to have it stowed, so you have to have it hanging loose all the time--which sort of cramps my style. Not a big deal, though. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could.
As others have commented, Columbia sizes run really big. I normally wear a large teeshirt, but I bought a medium and it fits perfectly. Make sure you compare the columbia sizing chart (just do a google search) with that of a brand you own. For instance, Columbia medium is almost exactly the same as Reebok large. Adjust accordingly.
