This is lightweight and should be a good outer layer in colder weather as long as you have something substantial underneath. The collar bothers my neck if I'm not wearing a high-neck shirt but I never do well with wool.

The other problem is that the wool lining on the inner collar is rough on your cheeks too. It would be nice with fleece on the inner collar

Just received it, did not wear it out yet, but from the feel of the lightweight material, it is more a coat for moderately cold temperatures. The material is nice enough, but not supersoft. Personally, I like soft wool like cashmere and camel hair and the wool of this coat is not as soft, however, you cannot expect that type of softness for the price of this coat.
