Typical Merrell Excellence By NickyG from St. Charles, IL on 01/22/2009 Pros: Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: There's a reason that people are such fans of Merrell boots, every product they make are consistently awesome. I had a pair of Merrell insulated and waterproof boots that I bought a few years ago and they were just awesome, loved everything about them. Unfortunately they were stolen from the gym locker room. So when this winter was coming in full force I was looking for something to wear in the snow that was also waterproof, but it wasn't in my budget to shell out the $100+ for another pair of Merrells that I wanted. So I tried to compromise, looking all over for a decent pair of boots that would at least get me by for 50-80 bucks. I almost bought a pair of something-or-ehters from Amazon, but luckily I ran across these while shopping for some ski gear. Perfect, I got everything I wanted (high top, insulated, sturdy, waterproof) in a Merrell for under $70 bucks on sale! Luckily they had my size. Just like my past Merrells, I will use them for everything..day hiking, snow, paintball, camping trips, whatever. With the insulation they may get a little too warm on hot summer days, but that isn't really their intended function. The only real sacrafice is that the color is a maroon-ish for my taste--would've prefered a deeper brown or the dark gray (which were sold out).
But this was well worth the compromise considering a I got an extremely comfortable, high quality boot for the price that I would of paid for another brand which I wouldn't of been near as happy with.
By east coast hiker from baltimore , md on 01/21/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Too Stiff/Not Flexible Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Everyday, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: first these boots are very warm but a little narrow and stiff.still waiting to get them broken in.
By Dave from Fort Wayne Indiana on 01/12/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Only in the winter, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational, Infantryman Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Need to take into account the size of sock you will be wearing, I went a whole size plus. For me, around the ankle needed to break in a little, but went out the day after I got them and after about 12 miles of very rough terrain the ankle didnt bother me at all. Overall, I am completely happy with these boots. Cant beat the price for the comfort and versatility of a good WINTER boot. With over 100 miles on them now I would recommend them to others Images shared by: DaveBoots at Charlies Bunion Tags: Picture of Product, Using Product
By 67X from Peoria, AZ on 01/10/2009 Pros: Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: First and foremost- order at least a half size larger than normal, one size larger if you plan on wearing thick socks or adding extra insoles. This boot is all that Merrell has been- exceptional quality, good looks, and extreme functionality. For the dollar, one would be hard pressed to find a better made shoe. The Thermo 6 is not as pliable as its non-insulated Chameleon counterpart so some wearing them around for break-in is necessary. As with other insulated boots, lace them tighter than normal at first to prevent heel slip- this just seems to be the natural order of things as it happens with many cold weather boots 6 inches or lower in ankle height. With even light activity, I can not see a foot going cold given their Thinsulate properties and waterproofing to hold body heat in. Another typical, great boot from Merrell.
nice boot but on the narrow side By Travis from central mass on 11/08/2008 Pros: Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Water Resistant Best Uses: Everyday, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Ran a bit narrow. I had to exchange them for another boot that came in a wide. I can usually wear a regular width, but these were too narrow. Otherwise they were a nice looking, comfortable boot.
By ambudsman adams from st, louis, missouri on 07/29/2008 Pros: Great Traction, So comfortable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: a couple of times a year i'll go west to fish (and snowboard) and will go backcountry hiking/camping on at least one of those trips. these are as comfortable as any shoe ever...every merrell i've put on is that way. These are real rugged, big chunky soles, metal eyelets, waterproof, insulated... the only "breaking in" was the tongue. as with most mids (i assume) the tongue on my left boot was rubbing my lower shin wrong but it soon formed to my flex. i recomended these to all my "west" friends and always sing the praises for sierra tradingpost
By Breesha from Illinois on 07/27/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I am a woman who needed a new pair of hiking boots. After coming across these, I realized they would be perfect for my needs--durable, waterproof, supportive--but I was a little leary since they were in mens sizes. I simply went to Sierra Trading Posts sizing guide, which was a big help, and bought the boots. I can't tell you how glad I am that I did. They are great--lots of support, warm, and incredibly comfortable! In fact, I don't think I ever have had boots this comfortable. They are very soft and cushioned everywhere you want them to be. I didn't have to break them in, either. Hiked in them straight out of the box. They handled creek crossings well--no wet socks. They are fairly lightweight and have great tread on the bottom. Since these have Thinsulate insulation, I'll also be using them when I shovel my driveway this winter!
By Melly from Glasgow, Scotland on 06/10/2008 Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: After receiving these boots i put them on straight away, hoping they would be as comfortable as previous reviews suggested they would be. I was not disappointed, this feels like a fat spongy slipper, although i think these will be a bit too snug for their intended purpose(very long Scottish summer hike) Will definitely get great were from this product. Right boot squeaks a little though.
