substantial and excellent boot. By peter v. from stockton, ca. on 02/13/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Durable Best Uses: Backcountry, Everyday Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too big Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: i wear mine at work as an industrial mechanic and they are a fine boot. there could be a bit more arch, but one layer of tape under superfeet insoles does the trick. i found there to be a substantial gap between sizes 11 and 11.5, which resulted in some heel lift, but oh so comfortable later in the day feet. the soles are quite durable, and appear to be entirely immune to oil/solvents even over many months. i like stouter footwear, and have worn out any number of pair. premium boots are a luxury i go to some lengths to afford myself. these are the real deal, even at retail.
By MDC from SLC from Salt Lake City, UT on 01/30/2008 Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Peakbagging Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I havn't worn these enough to comment on anything but the fit of the shoe. The length and width were right on relative to the Merrell shoes I own, but the volumn towards the front of the shoe was substantial enough to put some "Montrail Enduro-Soles" moldable foam insoles in the shoe. With this done, I think these shoes could become the most comfortable hiking shoes or any other kind of shoe I've ever owned. The insole that came with the shoe didn't seem anything special, so maybe they allow for individual customizing. I also own a pair of Dunham Mountain Master leather, Italian made shoes. These Alico's aren't quite as heavy, but are real close; 4 lb 14 oz compared to 5 lb 8 oz. I don't know if I'll like these as much, but the workmanship is excellent. The Summitt should be good for just about any kind of hiking, except they look too good to scuff up.
By Scott from Southwest Colorado on 01/18/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Non-slip sole, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels half size too big Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: It took quite awhile to break these boots in (2-3 months of solid wear) and I wasn't sure they would work for me. But once they are broken in, they are wonderful. The construction is simple but superb - high quality leather. I am not a super avid backpacker, but I took these on a 20 mile trip last summer for which it rained heavy for about 12 of those miles. I carried about 40 pounds of gear. My feet never got wet and I had no blisters, not even hot spots. The lacing allows for custom fitting around your foot. I replaced the thin insole with a work boot insole [...] and it has been fine.

By mb from Monterey, CA on 12/26/2007 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Leather lined, Stable, Stitch-down soles Best Uses: Backcountry, Comfortable for day hikes, Heavymedium packing Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These are great value, hard-to-find old school backpacking boots. The feature that attracted me most is the stitch-down sole which can be cheaply repaired by most village shops, unlike many bonded soles- a great advantage if you depend on these for daily wear. Also hard to find a leather lined boot anymore at this price. To me the toe box feels a bit wide- much more so than my old Lowa Scouts, but my feet are on the narrow side. Installing a pair of gel insoles took care of the fit though, and the length is dead on. I haven't used them much yet, but they appear to be a very durable boot, and I can't beat the price.
By MD from Pittsburgh, PA on 12/23/2007 Pros: Durable, Great Traction, Stable Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels half size too big Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I finally gave in a purchased the summit boot and so far I do not have any regrets. They are stiff out of the box but with some oil, wax and about a week of casual wear I am seeing their potential. The solid leather construction seems like it will out last the many pairs of rubber/plastic I have owned in the past, I can see replacing the soles instead of the boots. The summit offers good support, comfort and durability. If you are considering them, get them while they are available[...]

By Davimdram from Cleveland ,oh on 11/26/2007 Best Uses: Backcountry, Everyday Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I am on my fourth set of soles in about 3 years wearing these boots daily doing construction. They took a long time to break in (several months of daily use). The lining is now giving out and I have to go through breaking in a new pair. Its great to see that they are still available.
I placed a 1/4" cork under the inner foot liner and the replacement soles are softer than the original but the system works for me.
Again, it is difficult to get these boots broken in. The occasional hiker would never get them broken in to the point where they could truly appriciate them. I would say I nearly went through a set of soles before they were broken in.
By Thermal from Big Bear City, Ca on 10/31/2007 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Non-slip sole, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots were noticeably lighter than my old, very heavy, old-school boots that have seen better days after 15 years. I did not expect the Alicos to last as long, but they are awesome! After a week of wearing them around the house, I used them to hike the JMT, no blisters, sore spots or any ther kind of problem! Bought a second pair in case I live long enough to wear these out.
By Hank the landscaper from Augusta, Georgia on 10/18/2007 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Non-slip sole, Stable, Very supportive Cons: Heavy, Not Water Resistant Describe Yourself: Landscaper Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I needed a pair of boots that would last more than 6 months and decided to spend some real money. These boots are a bargain at their price. I will have a year on them this January. I have enjoyed them thoroughly. They are heavy and not water-proof. The soles are starting to wear and I will need to replace them January for sure. They stand up to anything that you throw at them. I have rotated these boots out with a pair of Georgia boots and North Face trail runners. Yes, the sole is still about to wear out. I would strongly recommend these boots to anyone looking for a bargain and wanted a TRUE hiking boot. I am thinking of buying another pair to keep just for personal outdoor adventures. They should really last a lifetime then.
