By Danger from Fort Collins, CO on 03/25/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Sturdy/Durable Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday Describe Yourself: Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought this boot, and when I wore them the first day they were very stiff. So the next day I tried not lacing the top and then my heal started to come up and I got some nasty blisters.
I am trying to break these in for a summer job so I wear them to class everyday which equates to about a mile of walking every day. They are much more comfortable than the first day and now I love wearing them. Ive only put about 5 miles on them so far. I can tell these will last a very long time!
By Mrflatus from Kalispell, MT on 03/23/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Excellent craftmanship and quality. A little tough to break in. The area over the tongue is causing some pain across the extensor tendons. Hopefully this will resolve with time. They are a little soft in the toe flex, I had hoped they where 3/4 shank but seem more like half shank. Overall great boots that take some time to break in but should last a long time. I had a pair of Alico summits before that lasted 6 yrs of abuse and these seem burlier. I have not had this pair long enough to seriously abuse them yet.
Heavy Sturdy Quality built boot By Outside worker from Michigan on 03/22/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This is a very old fashion quality built boot. It is very heavy but you do get used to it. Great ankle support and nice stiff sole. The major fault with this boot is the thin insole. It should be replaced to avoid any break in blisters. Other than that it should last a long time.
There's No School Like the Old School By cgeorgen from Morgan Hill, CA on 03/19/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These are the world's greatest old time Alpine boots. The Norwegian welt allows easy resoling, which I think is great. These boots are bigger, badder, thicker, and stiffer than any I've been able to find elsewhere, and they're exactly what I wanted. With proper care, these boots should last many, many years.
By Ed from Los Angeles on 03/19/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Cons: Long Break-in, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Best Uses: Extreme mountaineering Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Well suited for rugged rocky terrain, heavy duty construction, toughest looking and feeling boots I've seen. Pretty stiff, for serious usage.
By Samsa from Brattleboro on 03/16/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Double stitched, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These Boots are HEAVY and tough to break in. BUT once they break in you will have a boot that lasts a lifetime. I have a pair of Alico mountaineering boots I bought about 10 years ago. Soles wore off them, easy enough to replace with these boots. Wore them every day, still wear them. Very comfortable after the long break in period (worth it). I never took care of the leather and they are starting to show cracks. So I bought a new pair and intend to treat them with the respect they deserve. Boots easily worth twice the price I paid here.
By Lawrence from Ontario, CANADA on 03/16/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Cons: Ankle collar is confining Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This boot reminds me of the Kastinger's I purchased in Scotland in 1973-virtually indestructible and stiff. It feels like a downhill ski boot, and, like my old Kastinger's will doubtless last forever--the leather doesn't even wrinkle or crease when you use them and probably won't for the forseeable future. For my feet, which are pretty battered up, a half size bigger seems to be best, as they are a narrow fit.You can adjust the fit by experimenting with the lacing, so that the ankle collar, which I find is high and confining, can be loosened enough to permit a good stride. All in all, these boots are made to last, and the price is attractive.
By petrookio from OKC on 03/16/2009 Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: They might fall apart because of that plastic midsole; the Italians are masters at this art: I have some other shoes made in Italy that are probably held together with superglue.
Would you like Boot with that Beef? By Zoltarswim from Albany, NY on 03/13/2009 Pros: Arch Support, Beefy, Sturdy/Durable Cons: Heavy, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small, Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought these boots as a replacement to my Vasque Sundowner everday boot. These boots are triple the protection that the Sundowner offers. They are much thicker, much better padded, and way way stiffer. It is for this last reason that I had to send them back. The 3/4 shank is just not functional as an everday around-town boot. I was impressed with the fit once I scooted down the adjustable tongue. These are great boots and I have returned them for a half-shanked Alico that I hope will be more applicable to everday wear. Alico knows how to do it with one piece leather construction.
