Light, breathable, poor support By Kevin from West Sand Lake, NY on 07/16/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Great Traction, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I'm using these as approach shoes (rock climbing) and on steeper terrain the lack of ankle support is noticeable. In my prior Merrill day hikers I did not have this problem. Issue seems to be with not being able to get them tied tight enough, and there's too much slip in the material around the opening. I also don't think the materials used around the opening/ankle are rigid enough, so when you shift the shoe just gives.
The good thing about them is the light weight and great traction. I'm also going to try a liner sock to see if it helps with the slipping, which may be a result of the sock slipping on the skin and not with the shoe. These are also very attractive shoes and even if I end up not using them hiking they're great for around-town.

I will be buying more! I bought these to get back into some hiking. I had very little break in time on them and jumped into a 11.5 mile day hike up the A.T. Saw all different types of terrain, got rained on so lots of water and mud. Stayed dry and not the first hint of any blisters. I can't wait to get back out...

By GadgetMan from Finksburg, MD on 07/07/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Great Traction, Non-slip sole, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Got a pair of these in size 11.5 which I normally wear and they were just a little bit small. I returned them for a size 12 and they fit great. They are very comfortable, well made and very light. I plan on using these on a canoe trip where I will also be doing a long climb and needed something besides my water shoes. These should do quite nicely. I would rate these 5 stars but have not used them enough for that.
