By Brimstone from Colorado Springs, CO on 07/09/2008 Pros: Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Professional/Guide Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The box said "wide". The boots said "wide". My toes said "Owww!". Very nicely made. Outstanding support for the weight. Excellent Euro-style stiff sole with a curved rocker bottom that makes you want to step on down the trail even though there's absolutely no sole flex. BUT the hard rubber toebox extends too far towards the back: whatever wideness is in the last is cancelled by the fact that this toebox is too narrow, at least for my wide foot. The effect is that of a pair of those hideous Italian pumps with the extended, pointed toes that chicks liked a few years back. The right boot bottom inside metal eyelet dug deeply into the big-toe/foot joint, promising excruciation on some future hike. The materials didn't seem like they'd stretch or break in much. Really like the Keprotec vamps; wish they extended all the way to the top of the ankle to form a twist-resisting exoskeleton ala the FSN 70's. Nearly as light as a hi-top trailrunner with much more support. Nice combo of fore-aft ankle flexibility and arch support, aided by a deep achilles notch. However, no flex at the instep flex notch. All the flex happens above the malleoli. The ankle is overly padded making it difficult to seal the top without a lot of tension on the laces. Also, the top inch of the ankle is constructed of what looks like heavy Lycra. Don't think that'll hold up too well. I'd carry some gaiters for serious hiking because the soft ankle opening, flexing with each step, is sure to suck in debris/snow/mud/rain. These are probably outstanding all-round boots for a medium-volume foot. I think I'll return them for a size larger, but I don't have high hopes they'll work for me.

These boots rock! They are comfortable, have great support, and most importantly, they are dry. I hiked around boy scout camp in the rain for two days and never got wet. I was able to wear them all day in comfort. I'd buy them again.

comfortable right out of the box! By unafordable from Wilmington, NC on 07/07/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Looks good, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I got these for my son, a boy scout, who's going to Philmont this summer. He already had a pair of boots that he'd broke-in for this trip but as with most kids his age, his feet decided to grow. Needless to say, at the last minute, here I am buying him another pair of boots. These are very well made, has plenty of support and he tells me they feel great on his feet. Just about no break-in at all. He is very pleased with the boots and that's saying something for a 14 year old kid to say!!
By Timbuktu from Delaware on 07/07/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Used this pair for hiking in the Smokies. This is my first pair of hiking boots and I really like them. I used them for a week in smokies hiking everyday. These shoes are waterproof and that really helped with the stream crossings. I would recommend them to anyone planning to buy a nice pair of boots for hiking.

Comfy, but wear mid- lightweight socks By hikinmike from Kingston, ny on 07/06/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Light Loads, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Very comfortable, warm & light - but I got heel blisters after a couple short hikes to break them in. Felt better with lighter weight socks though, so may be ok.
By Backpacker from IN on 07/06/2008 Pros: Ankle Support, Great fit for wide feet, Great Traction Cons: Not Durable/ Wears Easily Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This is my second pair of FSN95 boots. I have wide feet with narrow heels, and these boots actually fit me well. They are good all around boots, and I've taken mine to three continents in the past two months. They break in easily, and provide good support for backpacking.
The problem is that the tread wears quickly, and is not an easily replaceable sole like Vibram. In addition, the construction of the boot is in several pieces (making it more flexible), and the Gore-Tex liner can develop holes at creases, allowing water into the boot.
