By Colorado Day Hiker from Littleton, Co on 07/14/2008 Pros: Durable, Good Back Support, Good Padding, Strong Zippers Best Uses: Backpacking, Camping, Weekend Trips Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This was purchased to carry essential gear when taking moderate hikes from a camp site to the summit of some of Colorado's 14ers. The pack is a little heavy, but it holds everything I need for a day hike up and down just about any slope. My only complaints are that the zippers are very tough to get to and use, and I wish the hip belt had a some expandable pockets on each side. Other than that, great pack, great adjustability and stability.
By BrianSnat from Morris County NJ on 07/10/2008 Pros: Durable, Easy to Pack, Good Back Support, Strong Zippers Best Uses: Day hikes, Short Travel, Trail Work, Weekend Trips Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This is one well thought out pack, with numerous pockets for organization. It's hydration system compatible and also has side water bottle pockets that can double as a place to carry a digital camera, GPS or MP3 player.
It's large enough for to carry enough gear for winter hikes and great if you're carrying most of the family's gear on a day hike, or if you're out
for a long day on the trail. Minimalist backpackers will even find it sufficient for overnight trips.
The shovel pocket on the front is a nice feature that lets you carry wet raincoats, litter you may have picked up on the trail, or anything else you don't want to keep inside the pack with your gear and lunch.
It's a durable pack and the lightweight internal frame allows you to carry fairly heavy loads if needed. I use mine for trail work and consistently carry as much as 30 lbs of gear in it. It even carries my chainsaw if I slide
the bar through the pass through sleeve on one of the side pockets.
Even though the pack can carry a lot, it contracts to a manageable size if it isn't full.
If you need a versatile, largish day pack it's hard to do better than the Mountaismith Approach
