Pockets are useful. The shorts are really two in one, with a "padded brief" inside the shorts. The "briefs" are "hooked" into the shorts, and putting them on can be a little tricky. I cut the loops that held them together and now I have two separated items. Other than that, overall a nice pair.

I've never worn bike short before, but went ahead and got them. Seeing the size issues in other reviews I got a XXL (38-41) since I'm a 38-40 depending on what I ate for lunch. The shorts JUST fit without discomfort; a little snug for my fashion taste, but not uncomfortable. The big minus is the inner liner is sewn in by two 2-in straps so you can't remove it to wash it separately or to just wear the outer shorts. The liner comes out in the washer and tangles around everything. Also, you can't put them in the dryer, you have to line dry them. Even in the dry Colorado climate it takes two days to dry. I don't know if I'd recommend these or not, to early to tell. I've only ridden in them twice and I'm not real impressed, but not real disappointed.
