Deeper "pockets" allowed for easier change of sheets-we have a memory foam mattress pad that adds a few inches to the height of the mattress.
We live in the high country of Colorado and use flannel sheets year round.

Nice and warm for those long cold winter nights. They are also have very deep pockets for even the largest mattresses.
