National Geographic

On January 27, 1888, 33 explorers and scientists organized a society “for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge”. The world may have changed dramatically during the last century, but The National Geographic Society has remained a prestigious constant in a world hungry for knowledge. From cartography to photography, National Geographic has no equal in bringing the fruits of its explorations into the palms of our hands… through its esteemed magazine, award-winning television programming, and interactive maps and CD’s that allow you plan your vacations and trail adventures using elaborate topographic maps that profile elevation and distance.

It doesn't seem interactive at all. It is a detailed map but over ten years old makes it out of date

Apparently this map software was not for windows XP, but nothing in the sales BS indicated that. I did get it loaded & will use with xp after some difficulty. Does not integrate with the Geographic maps I already have. Cheap, got what I paid for.

Could not get anything out of this that a paper map wouldn't do better. Definitely was not going to download into my Garmin GPS which is approximately 10 years newer than this software.

Comments:
The propaganda that comes with the cd-rom claims that one can download free trails into the map software. I tried repeatedly and exchanged several emails with the manufacturer. After a confusing back-and-forth in which I had to figure out which code to enter into their website, where, download what additional software, etc. etc. I am STILL not able to find the free trail maps they claim are available. Moreover, after several hours playing with the maps, I'm still learning the somewhat awkward "tools". For simple uses this is very helpful. Just find where you want to go, check the elevation, print the map. More complicated uses (printing a map with a route, for instance) take some learning.

Old and not very useful.
By JD from VA on 04/20/2009
Pros:
None
Cons:
Not user friendly
Best Uses:
None
Primary use:
Personal
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
This was an old and out of date copy of a single park in the listed states, nothing outside the state was shown. You would be able to get adequate general terrain maps with a really good printer. Would recommend getting real trail maps though.

Version 2.1 of Topo software from 1999. Version or age should have been noted in description. Cannot get support or upgrades for software this old from support web site. Price was attractive, but if you are looking for current data, forget it.

Must have been made by company which preceded Nat. Geog. Works ok on my computer. Some offered services seem to be obsolete.
