Away from water this product is great! By Ed. from San Diego, California on 04/10/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The boot has great ankle support and good traction. It is an excellent hiking boot. The only problem that I have found is that is looses all traction on wet or slippery ground. In fact, if there is just a little water on the ground, the boot is dangerous. I was hiking near Victoria Falls in Africa, and the mist from the falls made the rocks wet. I almost broke my neck slipping. This would be a perfect boot, if they put on a sole that will not slip on wet ground.
By zoop from Charlton,MA on 04/07/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too big, Feels too large Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought these for our daughter who is taking them to the Artic (Svalbard) to do some climatology research on a glacier. She will be on very slippery and uneven terrain and it will be wet and cold. It looks like these will do the trick. She is breaking them in now since blisters on a 4 hour hike in the middle of nowhere are no fun. They seem a little large but may still work with layers of socks.

This ascent shoe is perfect! By Monday climber from Olympia, WA on 04/03/2009 Pros: Rugged, Weather Resistant Best Uses: Bouldering, Long Climbs Describe Yourself: Avid Climber Sizing: Feels half size too big Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I normally wear a men's 11 and these were a 10 1/2 and fit perfectly. They are very similar to the Scarpa lite ascent, except wider in width. I love low top climbing shoes over bulky mountaineering boots, which I only take if crampons are necessary. My ankles are strong and I hike in summer and winter in these kind of shoes with ankle gaiters. The stiff soles allow my feet to be comfortable for 16 miles or longer day hikes and weekend overnighters. The stiff soles give good stability on steep scree and climber's trails, much preferred by me over traditional trail runners and lighter hiking boots. These shoes are Italian, very well made, a good price, and very comfortable. It's too bad they are discontinued. This is the first pair of ascent shoes that I have found comparable to the Scarpa lite ascents which also were discontinued. If available, I would buy another pair.
Great Fit for Low Volume Feet By AKRiverGirl from Anchorage AK on 03/31/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I bought a pair of these boots at full price on the recommendation of my local mountaineering shop two years ago (AMH, outfitters for Denali etc.). They fit my low volume feet very well, with room for my orthotics. So far I've worn them on several long backpacking trips here in AK and also for day hikes in the winter. I don't love Goretex boots -- if they get wet, they are hard to dry when you're backpacking -- but most boots seem to come in Goretex these days.
When I saw the boots for 40% off at STP, I jumped on them. When you find gear that works for you, always buy two or more! For me, Italian hiking boots have always been best -- least amount of heel slip.
These boots are stiff enough to allow edging on narrow ledges but not as stiff as my leather mountaineering boots. Much more comfortable on approaches, however, and much lighter on your feet all day. I've carried 40 lbs. (I only weigh 110) in these boots with no problems. I highly recommend them for women like me with long toes, narrow heels, and moderate-arched bony feet.
By yuan from Denver, CO on 03/28/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: It is really comfortable, plus looks cool.
couldn't be better.
By MDC from SLC from Salt Lake City, UT on 03/27/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Flexible, Nice looking, Sturdy/Durable Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Light Loads Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Excellent boot for intermediate hikes. Like other AKU boots, these are well suited for what they are made for. Not quite as heavy duty as the Utah Lite or Micro, but more supportive than most midweight boots. As midweight boots go this offers better construction and better materials than most. The workmanship is top notch. The boot offers lots of toe wiggle room and extra length so you don't have to lace them extra tight when walking downhill. I would recommend this boot for someone who is new to hiking as it's comfortable and light with good support and will work well for a broad range of hikes and should last a long time. I would recommend it for anyone for day hikes or backpacking with lighter loads.
GREAT SUPPORT, VERY COMFORTABLE By STEVE THE HUNTER from NEW CASTLE, COLORADO on 03/25/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: THIS BOOT WAS PURCHASED FOR MOUNTAIN HIKING BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF SHORT STEEP OUTINGS I MAY ALSO USE THEM FOR BIG GAME HUNTING IN STEEP TERRAIN.
Believe the product info... By Jill from Mass. on 03/25/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Gorgeous, Great Traction, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too big Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: ...and not the review below mine or you will be left confused and doubting just which size to buy as I was.
Normally I'm a size 9, "STP" suggests going with a half size smaller...I was very nervous about this, esp after reading the ONE review here saying that not only do they not run a half size bigger like "STP" states but that they are a good full size smaller! (I suspect her daughter probably has bigger feet than she'd like to admit to, it happens) Wow, I thought, what to do! Well, "STP" only had 8 1/2 left anyways...No 9, which I'd normally be, not even a 9 1/2 and I'd never even think I'd be a 10, even being a 9 and with a, "they're a full size too small" review there...So anyways, I only had the 8 1/2 half size smaller option, which they suggested, anyways...So 8 1/2 I ordered...They came...And they fit perfectly! AND I am not often a size 8 1/2...I even had my feet measured before ordering just to make sure I wasn't moreso a 9 1/2 and then therefore my half size smaller would actually be a 9 (I have all those size shoes, 8 1/2, 9 and 9 1/2 so wasn't fully sure which was my true size) and turns out I am a 9...And I even went to not 1 but 3 sport stores trying on boots (Hey, I admitted I was nervous, esp after reading that review) and always, never fail, 8 1/2 was too snug, 9 1/2 was too loose and the 9's were perfect...So the half size smaller, 8 1/2 "STP" was correct in suggesting because those are the ones that fit perfectly. So don't be confused and worried like I was after first reading "STP's" suggestion and then this, at the time, only review...And just order the half size (well once they get more sizes besides a now only 6, in) and you'll be good to go!
Oh and I checked off "feels half size too big" because that's what they say, order the half size smaller...I don't mean, I'm unhappy with mine that feel a half size too big...Since again, I took "STP's" suggestion and ordered a half size smaller.
Also, I put 4 stars rather than 5 only because they may be slightly heavy, but they probably do deserve 5 full stars as some boots just come heavier and certainly it says just how heavy they are in the info. And honestly, I should give them that extra star back for beauty alone...Yes, I'd have liked a little less heavy of a boot...BUT I admit, I moreso went for looks...I wanted my boot to be beautiful and these are certainly that...And they're not so heavy that it's not well worth it!
And this review is overly wordy because I'm trying to be as helpful as I can.
