Looked better than they feel By Pinched in MI from SE Michigan on 03/24/2009 Pros: Rugged, Weather Resistant Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Way too stiff for hiking, would've thunk it'd be more flexible without a stiff shank. The toe creased at the wrong place, putting pressure directly on the toes. Don't know if breaking them in would help or not, didn't want to put my feet through that. My girlfriend says the same thing with hers. Will return both pairs without using them. Will go with more comfortable trail shoes, as reviewers' indicate these can be used for "approach" trips.

By Hiking Diva from Sandia Park, New Mexico on 03/23/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Good Toe box, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I love to hike in the mountains in New Mexico and Colorado. These boots have been wonderful so far. I love the support they provide. I bought these boots without knowing much about them. I am so glad I did! They are great- no hot spots, no break in. Just put them on and go!
By Lisa Pisa from Boise, ID on 03/20/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Researched feedback on several different boots before I bought these. Felt very comfortable the moment I put them on. Enough support in all the right places. Had them on the trail already, grip well down steep/rocky terrain. The only adjustment I had to make was loosening the laces around the ankle when tied too tight.
By Hawaii Plant lover from Hilo HI on 03/19/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Water Resistant Cons: Not Durable/ Wears Easily, Soles too thin Best Uses: If your don't hike often, Light Loads Describe Yourself: Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Do not use these boots if you haike off trail or in rough terrain. I bought them three and a half months ago and need a new pair already! The sole wears out very quickly, tears on rocks, and the shoe lace eyes break VERY easily.
Great Winter Climbing Boot By aMountainClimber from Los Angeles on 03/17/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels half size too small, Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Scary light (about 3.5 lbs), warm, and dry with absolutly no break in required. Not a box, providing great tactle feadback. Velcro floating tongue makes for easy fit adjustments. Lots of rocker in the sole (convex not flat) makes flat trail walking easier but results in less than ideal traction on wet rock or ice (nothing is perfect). Was developed for a european climbing team and it shows. A steal at these prices.
By cammo from Ft. Walton Beach, FL on 03/17/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water proof, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Military, Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: With my profession we spend many hours in boots. A packed ruck sack with 40-100 lbs of additional weight and these boots are great for it. These boots withstand standing water with ease. They fit a little snug but that is because I was sent a whole size smaller than ordered. I have no question that Sierra would have replaced them but I did not have time to wait for another pair to arrive.
By aMountainClimber from Los Angeles on 03/17/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: First the good, they are very warm, very light and are well made. (all for a good price) The Bad? They have a lot of rocker (convex sole, not flat) making trail walking easier, BUT, this kills your traction on wet rock and hard pack snow. It also makes edging in steep loose terain a problem as well. I really hated them on the dry steep climb I tried them on. So where do I use them? Snow travel with light weight crampons gave me a fast super-light combo with warm feet. Just don't take the crampons off...
A good mountaineering boot By Summit seeker from Colorado Springs, CO on 03/17/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable Cons: Too Stiff/Not Flexible Describe Yourself: Aging Mountaineer Sizing: Feels half size too big Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Based on the comments that these boots run a bit long for the stated size, I bought size 9-1/2 although I usually wear size 10. They fit perfectly. For a true mountaineering boot, they are light enough to let this old climber feel a few years younger! I wanted a boot with a stiff lasting board or shank, but actually found these a little too stiff. (Be careful what you ask for - you might get it.) The lacing system is great and easy to use. For climbing, the boot can be laced snugly around my foot without squeezing my toes, yet it is easy enough to loosened the laces a little for more relaxed hiking . The only thing, so far, which keeps me from giving a 5-star rating is the mesh lining around the ankles which is too abrasive. Soft top grain leather there would be a big improvement.
By hyoter from rensselaer, ny on 03/16/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Sturdy/Durable Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: i've owned half a dozen hiking boots in my life and i've never seen a pair that is more perfectly constructed. the leather is absolutely beautiful. the asymmetrical tongue is very comfortable.
i wear my boots around town as well and in the wild. these boots are not too heavy for everyday use but seem very sturdy so that will be great for my purposes.
sizing was a bit tricky for me. i am on the border between 7.5 and 8. mostly i wear 8. i ordered the boots in 8 and 8.5 because of the note to order up a half size. the 8s turned out to be perfect for me. so i guess i'd say they run a 1/4 size to small.
