Great for weekend traveling By Dawn from Washington on 06/29/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Easy To Load, Good for shorties, Good padding, Highly Adjustable, Large capacity Best Uses: Backpacking, Car Camping, Day trip, Hiking, Weekend traveling Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Minimalist Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I got this bag for weekend traveling, air travel carry-on, and overnight backpacking trips. It's got a lot of space, a diversity of pockets, and feels comfortable and light. It's working out great for my 5'0 frame.
By Hiking Mommy from Northern Virginia on 06/26/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Roomy Cons: No accessable pockets, Not adjustable enough Best Uses: Baby carrying, Hiking Describe Yourself: Practical Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I needed a baby carrier backpack to use on day hikes and around town and so far this pack is working out pretty well. I find it a little difficult to get on and off unless I use a bench, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. It works great when my husband and I are together, but if I'm alone, I can't get into any of the pockets without taking the pack (and baby) off my back. That means if I'm using it around town, I have to find a way to carry my wallet/phone. I'd like it better if there were at least a pocket or two on the straps/hip belt to hold a cell phone or small wallet.
The baby likes the pack and seems comfortable in it. My only concern on his part is that he'll reach the 30 lb (baby + gear) weight limit too fast!
I didn't think the zip-off diaper bag feature was going to be useful, but I've already used it several times. Images shared by: Hiking MommyHitting the trails Tags: Using Product
A disappointing purchase. By Crikay from Charlotte, NC on 06/25/2009 Pros: Easy to pitch, Easy to strike down, Lightweight, Looks good, Roomy, Sturdy Cons: Leaks badly, Missing item, Poor Fly Design Best Uses: Car Camping, Family camping Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Judging by the other great reviews this tent has received I think I must have been unlucky and got a bad tent. [...] I then did a test erect in the back garden and caught a good shower that night. I'm glad I was snug in my own bed for the test run because the next morning the tent contained a giant puddle.I also found the rain flaps around the door a bit of a nuisance as they would get caught in the zip unless you really paid attention, and I think the rain fly was a little skimpy. Also, as it's a close out it's impossible to find the matching footprint anymore so be prepared with homemade tarps cut to shape if you are a footprint advocate. On the plus side I think I would have considered swapping it for another Rio Grande 6 if I'd had enough of a time frame to accomplish this before I was due to take the family camping. It was really easy for one person to erect and strike down. Fairly lightweight for a car camping tent and seemed to be a good size for my family of two adults, toddler, baby and dog. The big windows and ventilation seemed great. One star rating from me because really, it's a tent and when it comes down to it the main purpose is to keep you dry and sheltered, and it failed. By Christine, mom of three from St Paul, MN on 06/23/2009 Pros: Easy To Set Up, Sturdy, Waterproof Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Three kids and lots of stuff and we were still comfortable. We stayed dry in the rain and didn't get too cold when the temp. dropped in the night.
By Rho from Germany on 06/21/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Good padding, Large capacity Best Uses: Day trip, Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Minimalist Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Great pack for hiking/daytrips. Water bladder fits in easily, not like in some backpacks I've had. Side pockets are great for storing random things while hiking. You can fit a lot of stuff inside this bag. Comfortable, feels great to wear. Can't wait to go hiking with it again.
Don't buy it if it might rain By Mike from Little Rock, Arkansas on 06/15/2009 Pros: Easy To Set Up, Sturdy Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: Bought the tent for family camping, read several reviews saying that it was a great tent and no prep required prior to use. The weather condition for my trip were as follows; light to medium rain for 10 hours and wind 5-10 mph. 4 hours into the storm the tent started to leak a little, I usually expect a seam of two to leak on a new tent. However, after returning from a two hike we found that a pool had built up in the floor of the tent and every seam on the tent and rain fly was not just leaking but letting water pour in.
The only positives for the tent were the ease of set up for a tent that size and the outstanding ventalation, which was a life saver on the first night of our 4 night campout when it was 80 degrees and humid at night.
Practical Design; Home Away from Home By Northern Highland Campers from Wisconsin on 06/14/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Easy To Set Up, Fly Works Well, Lightweight, Roomy, Sturdy Cons: Door zippers got stuck Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: The Kelty Rio 6 Grande was prefect for the two adults, two giggly 12 yr old girls, one lap dog, and all of our clothing. Privacy was good.
During the 45-deg nights of Northern Wisconsin we wondered how effective the ceiling ventilation system would be during more normal summer temperatures.
Two teen aged boys slept in the Kelty Merced 6 with a medium size dog, it's kennel, and all of their clothing. They had room to spare.
Our Keltys have been a great addition to our camping family. We hope to use them again soon.

By Summit King from Iowa on 06/10/2009 Pros: Easy To Set Up, Fly Works Well, Sturdy Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer What Is Your Gear Style: Minimalist Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This tent is true to size, we could sleep 8 adults in this easy. Works great for car camping with a family of 5. Super easy setup, 15 minutes in the dark for initial setup. Plenty of room inside.
overall a good pack, just not for me By Jackie Chan from Colorado on 06/09/2009 Pros: Easy To Load, Large Capacity Best Uses: Extended Hikes, Travel Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational What Is Your Gear Style: Comfort Driven Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This pack is overall a good buy for the money. However, I tried a very similar one on at another store before I bought this one to make sure it would fit. When I got mine, it was too big and gapped under the shoulder straps. I ended up returning it.
