By maineknitter from Maine on 07/01/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Long Break-in, No arch support Best Uses: Day Hiking, Harsh Terrain, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels half size too big, Feels too large Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots are great. Very heavy duty. I sno-sealed and they are completely waterproof. It was recommended to order 1/2 size larger, and I wish I hadn't, but they still fit good enough. Wide toe box, which I need. No arch support and the foot bed is hard, so you'll need to just add a more comfortable liner (I just substitued a New Balance sneaker footbed and now they're great!) Highly recommended if you want a pair that will last a few years.
Excellent Outdoor Work Boot By Zappa from SW Oregon on 06/26/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Heel Box, Sturdy/Durable Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Professional/Guide Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I am employed by the National Park Service as a maintenance worker in the Pacific Northwest. I can be working under vastly different conditions, ranging from indoor computer work, hiking 8 miles with 40-60# pack to trail creation and rock work. Best job in the world! These boots were purchased for additional arch and heel support due to a long-term problem with plantar fasciitis. Problem is now improved dramatically since purchase. I normally wear a size 12.5-13 medium work boot. These boots were ordered at size 13 and fit fine for the first week or so. Then, as the sole & leather started to flex, I began to notice my toes bumping the front of the toe box, particularly on decents of any consequence. The only option to address the problem was an arch support insert to stabilize the foot within the shoe. Wonderful boot, well constructed, but the sole inserts that come with the boot need to be replaced with something more sustantial.
comfortable, solid boot. Good for daily. By Old Fart from Canterbury, NH on 06/25/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Light Loads, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Perfect for daily work wear for being on your feet all day.
By BuffaloBob from Staten Island,NY on 06/23/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer, Environmentalist Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These Boots are high quality and made the way trekking boots should be made. They may not be for everybody but if you want a boot that will last and keep you moving then these are for you. They are heavy and do require a break in period but they won't fall apart when you are ten miles from camp.
By Tele-Bob from KS/Mo Line on 06/22/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These are the best so far! This 2nd pair will be my back up while I can get em at this price! And I went another 1/2 size smaller - 1st were 8.5W these are 8W. Replacing my Danner Size 9
I have feet with a fat ball area, skinny ankles & a high arch. And the way I walk,I destroy shoes & boots in less than a year. I have a trunk full of resoled Army issue boots ranging from 7.5XW to 9's, so much for standard shoe sizes. And 2 of the optional Matterhorns from the 10th Mnt Div. A favorite for extreme wet & winter. But I wore those out & the resole ruined the H20 proof as did the restitch due to water proofing ruining the threads and my feet would sweat(ie gortex boots)- by the 2nd pair they were not warrantied if you used snowseal (issued 1st time)or any other treatment. SO be ware of any extra treatment for your shoes. I now work winters for a small ski resort and my 1st pair that were a little long work great with heavy socks on snow & ice daily and into the office for the paperwork without worries of feet starting to sweat. Theses are not a cushy soft boot - but built the way they should be - tough & comfortable with in reason. AND these have helped my chronic low back pain :-)
By Swamp Daddy from Western Massachusetts on 06/22/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: After a week of constant break-in wear (no loads but three applications of Sno Seal), my Guides feel great. My pair is medium width, and runs a little narrow in the heel but average across the ball, perfect for backpacking. Nice strong heel counter. Overall, stiffer than most of what's on the market today, but back in the 70s these would qualify as an easy-break-in boot.
you'll want these more after few years By Scoutmaster Larry from Marietta, GA on 06/22/2009 Pros: Built like a brick s-h, Should last a lifetime, Sturdy/Durable Cons: Heavy, Long Break-in, Too Stiff/Not Flexible Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I had to return because I didn't think I would live long enough to break them in
By Fell off the Orient Express from Apache Junction, Arizona on 06/20/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Flexible, Too soon to tell most Best Uses: Day Hiking, Light Loads, Too soon to tell Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational, Old fogey hiker Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Ordered the boots never expecting mail order
hiking boots to fit. I was dead wrong, and amazed that old fashioned Italian boots fit perfectly right out of the box. As soon as I put them on I walked out the door and kept walking around the block a couple of times, adjusted the laces and came back inside. The boots almost feel custom made for my feet, which is incredible considering I have given away 3 or 4 pair of much more expensive high tech hiking boots bought in specialty stores that never came close to working out. Kudos to the makers of these wonderful boots.
By DigitalEyze from Incline Village, NV on 06/18/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm Cons: Heavy, Long Break-in Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads, Long-Distance Hiking Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Alico New Guide boots are the "heavy duty" entry in Alico's product line. Alico's are purpose-built, and if long trips over harsh terrain with a heavy pack are your use, these are the boots for you. This said, if you have lighter duty use in mind, Tahoes or Summits might be a better choice.
The boots are absolute tanks. They are built to provide support and protection. Thick, solid leather with a rugged sole. They are stiff, so plan to use them as everyday boots for a few weeks before taking them out on the trail in order to break them in comfortably. They should also get a coat or two of waterproofing spray (I use Kiwi Camp Dry) to keep them dry.
Like all Alico boots, the New Guides are true to size, so they should be ordered a size large to allow the two pairs of socks a rugged hike requires, and a 3rd party insole as all Alico boots require.
Alico makes great boots. I have Tahoes, Summits, and now New Guides. As if I need a reason, I'm looking forward to hitting the trail to give these the pounding they beg for.
By homdogs from Longmont CO on 06/18/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Best Uses: Cold Weather, Day Hiking, Heavy Loads, Light Loads, Long-Distance Hiking, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Casual/Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: These boots are a bit stiff to begin, but they flex more after a few walks. Excellent support and the stiffness means feet are not as sore after a good long hike up Longs Peak. I love these boots! I have one pair in Colorado and another pair in Afghanistan.
