slot under heel gets packed with snow By yew_betula from Bellingham, WA on 04/23/2008 Pros: Adjustable, Easy Entry & Release, Good Shock Absorption Best Uses: Cross-Country, Downhill Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: This binding is really a Silvretta Pure. It tours surprisingly well and is light for this kind of AT binding; Only Dynafits are lighter. I use it for short backcountry ski tours with a focus on intermediate level turns in the North Cascades (wet snow).
My main gripe is that the slot on the bottom piece under the heel always gets packed with snow. The top piece of the binding compresses snow down into an ice cube which is difficult to scrape out. I've put ski wax, ArmorAll and MaxiGlide in the slot to keep snow from packing in but all to no avail. So, when touring I've spent more time scraping snow out of the slot than skiing. This is very frustrating and not practical. If you don't mind packed-in snow acting as a heel lift, it's not a problem. But on flats, it's not good. You also have to scrape out snow/ice out of the slot before locking down your boot's heels. If snow wasn't susceptible to packing down into the slot, this would be a decent binding. Perhaps on corn snow or in drier climates with fluffier snow this is not a problem? Images shared by: yew_betulaAtomic 412 alpine touring binding
By Playday mom from Bellingham, WA on 04/14/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Easy Lacing System Cons: A bit flexible in ankle Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Beautiful boots that are comfortable and easy to adjust.
By big stinky from San Diego (ski central) on 03/29/2008 Describe Yourself: Advanced Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Does the trem "High Speed Rail Transit" mean anything to you? No down side. These skis are worth the the retail price; so that makes the STP price the best I could find (and believe me I looked). Yes, I have recommended this to a friend. There is only one step to the top; I ask myself what the B5s would feel like. You can spend more money; but can you buy a better ski than Atomic? Tell you a secret - Ski Utah it really is different.
By Lady Ullr from Logan, Utah on 03/18/2008 Pros: Comfortable, Easy Lacing System, Warm Best Uses: Cross country skiing, Skate skiing Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I've used these boots for 5k skate loops, and they're very warm and comfortable. The only thing I don't like about them is that the inner boot (with pull-string adjustment) won't get tight enough for my very narrow, low-volume foot.
