By SARSteve from Santa Barbara, CA on 10/24/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Arch Support, Great Traction, Sturdy/Durable, Water Resistant Cons: Heavy, Long Break-in Best Uses: Harsh Terrain, Heavy Loads Describe Yourself: SAR EMT Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I am an EMT on a local SAR team; have been comparing boots with full, 3/4 and 1/2 shanks for a couple of months: last purchase was a pair of Zamberlan and this years model of this La Sportiva.
The Zamberlan are designed for lighter hiking: very comfortable out of the box, but did not like how low the boot was for ankle support. I tried to steer away from the La Sportiva only due to its heavy weight, but at this awesome price, and their known durability, I could not pass them up!
These are last years model that have been discontinued, and have 3/4 shanks. Very comfortable (I have a flat arch), and, despite its initial extreme stiffness (not to be understated), I was finally able to bend them to see where the shank ends and where it will bend once they are broken in: looks perfect for my 45 boot size. FYI, the Zamberlan had to be a size 46 for width, so I am very pleased these fit my wide feet better.
I may have to purchase a second pair before they are all sold out!
Third year purchasing from Sierra Trading Post: perfect record!
By Ern from Atlanta GA on 10/21/2009 Cons: Not flexible, Poor Cushioning Describe Yourself: Recreational Walker/Hiker Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: I wore these on an hour walk through the city. The soles were so firm that my feet were cramping by the end... not something that usually happens with new athletic shoes. These don't provide much arch support either. Perhaps these would be great if broken in, but for my purposes, I am looking for a really comfortable shoe for daily walks and occasional hikes. Great style, though, I was bummed to have to return them.
By redclaygirl from Albuquerque, NM on 10/20/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Casual Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: i wear these on a daily basis whether it is walking on city streets or hiking in the mountains
By Not YourRealName from Wyoming on 10/20/2009 Pros: Arch Support, Comfortable/No Break-In, Durable, Great Traction, Shock-Absorbent, Stabilizes Foot Cons: Not especially breathable, Not Water Resistant, Slow to dry Best Uses: Everyday, Grass, Mixed Terrain, Paved Trails, Rocky/Unstable Terrain Describe Yourself: Recreational Walker/Hiker, Trail Jogger Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Midsole is a nice balance of stiff/protective and flexy running-shoe softness. Although these are not very breathable, they are certainly NOT water/snow resistant, so hiking at altitude in the spring is a no go. Scotchgard helps. Otherwise I am happy with fit function traction etc. I wear these a lot in dirt and pavement and they are holding up nicely.
Excellent climbing shoe, supple leather By Climbing Mom from Philadelphia on 10/19/2009 Best Uses: Indoor, Outdoor Describe Yourself: Getting Started Sizing: Feels half size too small Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Supple leather, excellent value
By Trail Boss from Santa Fe, NM on 10/17/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Great Traction, Stable Cons: Sole Wears Out Quickly Best Uses: Backcountry, Day hikes, Everyday Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: No, I would not recommend this to a friend Comments: You see those bright little yellow outsole studs? They peel off quickly, leaving the softer black outsole to prematurely wear out. I've gone through many trail shoes, and I love the design and fit, but the life of this shoe is shorter than a gnat's. You've been warned.

There is zero ankle support, if that is something that you are looking for but a great shoe for every day activities.
