Hobie

Hobie

Hobie didn’t always make sunglasses. Starting out in his parent’s garage, Hobart "Hobie" Alter began making custom balsawood surfboards for friends in the summer of 1950. After a few short years, Hobie’s hobby became a full-fledged business as he opened his first surf shop in Dana Point, California. Today, the Hobie product line has expanded to include not only surfboards, sailboats and the like, but also some of the best looking polarized sunglasses around. Hobie sunglasses feature premium technologies like Hydro Clean, designed to maintain clear vision in wet environments. Whether you sail, surf, fish or kayak, a pair of Hobie polarized sunglasses makes a great choice for any on-the-water activity. At Sierra Trading Post, we carry discount Hobie sunglasses in a variety of styles, from wire-rimmed casual sunglasses to impact-resistant sport sunglasses.

The best optical quality of 3 Hobie sunglasses I've bought but still too low. Not suitable for anybody who want not only good frame, but also good lenses.

Great quality lightweight shades
By BambiVerified Reviewer from Portland, OR on 09/30/2008
Pros:
Durable, High Quality, Lightweight
Cons:
Not for low-light
Best Uses:
Everyday, Sun and glare protection
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
I love these sunglasses. I really wanted a large-lense, aviator-type style, so it was between these and another pair from Smith Optics (no longer available here). What won me over was how lightweight these were - they fit perfectly and I can't feel them on my face (I don't usually like wearing glasses because of this). I forget they're even there when I wear them up on my head! The fact that they're so lightweight is also a definite plus as I have them in mind for a planned PCT thru-hike next year and every ounce counts. They come in a very sturdy, high-quality case, although I might have to trade it in for a lighter one. I haven't exactly been careful with these sunglasses, but the polycarbonate lenses seem to be very durable and even after a month of regular summer use, haven't been scratched up in the slightest. I also really like the copper tint of these lenses. Everything stays true to color, crisp and bright with these, and the fact that they are polarized is a another plus. The only downside to these glasses is that the lenses, although they're not unusually dark, are too dark for low-light conditions (this may have to do with the color of the lenses). As I really only use them under really bright, sunny conditions, it hasn't been too much of an issue for me. Overall, this is a very high-quality pair of sunglasses that I'm really happy with. You definitely get what you pay for with these.

Hobie Diego Profile Sunglasses - Polarized

Good fit and feels comfortable
By CDVerified Reviewer from Houston, Texas on 08/28/2008
Pros:
Good Protection from the Sun, Stylish, Width just right
Cons:
Used condition
Best Uses:
Casual Wear
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
The fit was perfect - usually I have a hard time finding a frame that fits my face. Unfortunately, it arrived in used condition: scratches and fingerprint smudges on the lens and crushed packaging. Looked like someone played hacky sack with it. Sent it back for a refund.

Too Big
By Depot LadyVerified Reviewer from South Rim, Utah on 08/19/2008
Pros:
Adequate Tint, Good Polarization, Good Protection, Lightweight
Cons:
Rubs on eyebrows, Sits on cheeks, Uncomfortable
Best Uses:
At The Beach, Driving, working outdoors
Describe Yourself:
Comfort-Oriented, Modern, Practical
Sizing:
Feels too large
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
While they seem well made with adequate tint, the lenses were just huge from top to bottom (width was just fine). Felt like I had dinner plates on my eyes ;} Wrong design for my face. Nice otherwise, though a hard case should be included with these more expensive sunglasses.

Lenses are too small.
By UltraononVerified Reviewer from San Diego, CA on 08/13/2008
Pros:
Stylish
Cons:
Lenses are too small
Best Uses:
Casual Wear
Describe Yourself:
Professional
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
Lenses are too small therefore, they allow too much light in around the perimeter effecting peripheral vission. This defeats the purpose of wearing sunglasses.

Hobie Maywood Statice Sunglasses - Polarized (For Women)

I like, but I don't love these shades.
By TKK from Norfolk, Va on 08/12/2008
Pros:
Adequate Tint, Comfortable, Durable, Good Polarization, Good Protection, Lightweight, Scratch Resistant
Cons:
Too Small
Best Uses:
At The Beach, Driving, Special Occasions, Travel
Describe Yourself:
Career, Classic, Comfort-Oriented, Modern, Practical, Stylish
Sizing:
Feels too small
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
It ended up being a little blunt across the top. I thought it was going to be a little more rounded. It is not as feminine as I was hoping. The tortoise shell is cool, but one of the temples is a different type of tortoise from the rest of the glasses. The overall quality is good. It's a good price for polarized.
