Highgear

Highgear

Highgear began in 1999, when outdoor enthusiast Mike Hosey set out to create a unique line of compact and affordable outdoor navigation watches and tools. Hosey was already an avid adventurer, having spent countless hours skiing at Sugar Mountain, mountain biking Bent Creek and hiking in the majestic Pisgah National Forest. With the goal of producing more convenient and functional wilderness watches and survival tools for outdoorsmen, Highgear came to full fruition in 2001 with a host of cutting edge, hand-held Highgear navigational devices, compasses, altimeter watches, pedometers, heart monitors and unique survival tools. Today, the innovators at Highgear spend hours brainstorming new ideas, making product improvements, and enhancing the functionality of their watches, radio flashlights and electronic navigation tools. The result has been the line of Highgear high-performance tools and multi-purpose watches that make outdoor life safer and more enjoyable. The result is Highgear.

I'm a watch and gadget nut so this is right in-line. The key difference with this High Gear model is that it has a solid stainless case when many use plastic. I especially like the user replaceable battery feature.

Cons:
Unreliable
Best Uses:

Comments:
Nice looking watch. Temperature is not accurate due to the fact that it reads the temperature right next to your arm. Altitude is based on Barometric pressure so the accuracy varies with the weather.

Cons:
Heavy

Comments:
This altimeter watch is much better looking than many I've seen with the combination of a metal body and a moderate size (it does not stand out on my normal-sized wrists as the huge models from other manufacturers often do). However, the all-stainless-steel body is quite heavy. I have used the watch in the mountains in New Hampshire and Wyoming and found it to be very accurate, often erring less than 10 feet over the day, from elevations between 400 feet and 10,000 feet. One feature that I really like is the watch's ability to give a true barometer reading (adjusted to sea level) the way the airports / weather stations do. This is a boon for weather buffs like me. It also allows you to calibrate your altimeter even if you don't know your present altitude, if you have access to a nearby weather station's statistics. The only gripe I have about the watch is that the barometer/altimeter becomes inaccurate, by several hundred feet, when wet. I don't know if this is a feature common to these devices, but it happened both after wearing it in the shower and after a fall into deep slushy snow. In both cases the readings returned to normal after the watch dried out fully in a few hours. It was not affected by moderate rain showers.

Comments:
this was a very inexpensive item compared to its competition, but it has the basic features of a sports watch with a stylish band and a modern look. my main watch i wear is a rolex. i like this because i can get it dirty and not worry too much about it. i don't think this watch would fit a petite woman's wrist despite being noted as a unisex product.

I purchased the radio mainly for my son's camping trips. He likes to listen in his tent before sleeping. with this radio, he can listen without using a lot of battery, and if he leaves it on it will go off when the crank charge runs down. Included with the radio is recharge connection adaptors to fit Nokia, Samsung, LG and Motorola.
