By mthiker from Montana on 11/07/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I need room in the boot for some arthritic toe joints. These wide boots fit the bill. I did add a gel arch and wear a liner with my boot socks - then it is a great fit. I like stiff boots for the type of hiking I do. I have tried dozens of boots, most of which would not even accomadate my enlarged toe joints, others just had grommet over the joints or just not enough toe box. I got a second pair of these boots since I could get them to fit so nicely. (Note - I couldn't even wear the regular width barefooted, I have a normal width foot).
By amp from Savannah on 11/07/2009 Sizing: Feels true to size Width: Feels true to width Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: I got them yesterday. Just finished 9 miles...mostly on greenway and a couple on asphalt. Nice, nice shoe for me. I love the snug midfoot. The tongue is nice and padded, just the way I like trail shoes. I have a narrow foot so plush shoe parts always help...the collar is nice too and locks my heel in just fine. Cool that the rest of the shoe is built rather minimally though....keeps it lightweight but it's still rather sturdy feeling. I also love the roomy and very breathable toebox...very comfy. The mostly open mesh I imagine wouldn't work well for cold climates but here in coastal GA. it's exactly what I look for. Makes for a well draining, quick drying shoe too. I crossed two shallow creeks and they didn't get heavy at all.
Some of the reviews said the cushioning was soft in the heal. I didn't get that perception at all but then I have been running in Nike Lunaglides for several months now so my perspective is probably way off. The ride and transition were quite fast feeling and smooth.
As far as the outsole goes, I have no idea. The conditions here are pretty dry right now so no mud to slide on or pick up in the groves. I'll have to report on that later.
Great shoe and value here. This is by far the cheapest place for this shoe that I've found. I assume this model is about to be updated or replaced so I recommend not waiting on this deal if this shoe fits your profile.
By Fred Shread from Youngstown NY on 11/05/2009 Pros: Ankle Support, Sturdy/Durable, Warm, Water Resistant Cons: A little dorky looking Best Uses: Day Hiking, Everyday, Wet Conditions Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels true to size Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: Could use a little more cushion on the inner sole along with some more arch support. Good boot for the money.
By Mom who loves the great outdoors from Salt Lake City, UT on 11/05/2009 Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Great Traction, Stable, Water Resistant Best Uses: Backcountry, Cold weather, Day hikes, Wet Weather Describe Yourself: Avid Adventurer Sizing: Feels half size too small Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend Comments: So my all leather Raichle boots finally bit the dust on my last back packing trip. I have had them for 12 years on lots of hiking and backpacking trips. But it took 3 years(ouch) to break them in. The montrail boots fit like my Raichles after 12 years. But I did go with a wide width. I do not have wide feet but the montrails fit narrow to me. I also go with a half size bigger in hiking boots becuase I find that on backpacking trips if I wear a thin sock and a thicker sock I don't get blisters. Seem like a well built boot. After I put them to the test, I will let you know.

I run on trails, roads, and on a track. Perfect fit for me!
