It is indeed waterproof and still breathable. The outer fabric looks like canvas, but it and the acrylic lining are very soft.
The best feature is the "action-pleated back for ease of movement."

Like the other reviews, I found the inside a little rough compared to the outside but I liked the jacket so I persevered with it and found it softens a little with wear. In general, this was all I had hoped.
