Scientific Anglers

Scientific Anglers

Scientific Anglers, now a division of 3-M, was founded in 1945 by avid fly fishermen who knew the sport well and knew what the customer wanted. The founders realized that sometimes anglers want the line to sink and sometimes to float. Old fly lines were made of silk, had limited float capacity, would sink once they were soaked and took a long time to dry out. Scientific Anglers invented the first true floating fly lines, giving the angler more control. Schools of fishermen would crowd the stores to purchase this new product from Scientific Anglers. Other innovative products followed: sinking lines, shooting lines, tapered lines, the first balanced rod and reel system. Today Scientific Anglers is leading the way again with thinner, stronger lines, silicone-coated lines, see-through waterproof fly boxes, line-to-leader "simple twist" connectors and pre-rigged systems. Scientific Anglers has also eliminated the use of lead in sinking lines, helping to protect our waterways. At the epicenter of the fly fishing world today, Scientific Anglers doesn't have to fish for compliments… they caught their limit a long, long time ago.

Scientific Anglers System X Standard Fly Box - Waterproof

Good fly box, but not fully waterproof.
By doctoritVerified Reviewer from Amherst, MA on 06/24/2009
Pros:
Durable, Easy to open, Quality materials
Cons:
Not watertight
Best Uses:
Fly Fishing
Describe Yourself:
Casual Fisher
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
This is a great flybox but the seal is definitely not watertight - living low in my vest a high river day, just sitting in the water (not submerged), it leaked and I had to blowdry all my flies that night. On the other hand, I didn't buy it for watertightness - it does indeed float, spacing for flies is great, the hinge/opening, and case materials are all solid.

Scientific Anglers System X Standard Fly Box - Waterproof

Fly Box Difficult to Open
By dgoJMRVerified Reviewer from Durango, CO on 06/23/2009
Pros:
Durable, Easy To Transport
Cons:
Too Stiff
Best Uses:
Fly Fishing
Describe Yourself:
Avid Fisher
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
The fly box is well constructed and would be useful, except for one fault. The lids are VERY difficult to open. I can only wonder what it would be like if I was standing in the middle of a river trying to change a fly. The locking mechanism was so hard to use that I ultimately returned my Scientific Anglers fly boxes back to Sierra Trading Post.

Durable, Easy To Transport, Water proof
Best Uses:
Fly Fishing, River Fishing, Small Fish
Describe Yourself:
Avid Fisher

Comments:
This is my second Scientific Anglers Box. They are clear, have good rubber seals, inserts that easily accept the flys. Because they are two sided, they hold a large number of flys in a small space. I added some small attaching clips to connect them to D-Rings on my vest, waders or pack. They float, are durably built and compact. These are going to Yellowstone in September 2009.

Functional
Best Uses:
Fresh Water
Describe Yourself:
Avid Fisher
Bottom Line:

Comments:
strength is good but abrasion resistance is not a strong point. pinch on a couple of weights and drift through some rocks and you'll have a lot of fish breaking you off. but for what sierra is asking for 100m roll it may be worth checking your line a little more than normal. I'll finish off the roll I have and it will be back to rio or umpqua for me.

It's been a long time since I picked up a fly rod, after a few minutes of testing my rusty skills I found this rod easy to cast and prompted me to keep improving. You don't have to be rich to enjoy fly fishing ! Good Luck.
