Scientific Anglers

Scientific Anglers

Scientific Anglers, now a division of 3-M, was founded in 1945 by avid fly fishermen who knew the sport well and knew what the customer wanted. The founders realized that sometimes anglers want the line to sink and sometimes to float. Old fly lines were made of silk, had limited float capacity, would sink once they were soaked and took a long time to dry out. Scientific Anglers invented the first true floating fly lines, giving the angler more control. Schools of fishermen would crowd the stores to purchase this new product from Scientific Anglers. Other innovative products followed: sinking lines, shooting lines, tapered lines, the first balanced rod and reel system. Today Scientific Anglers is leading the way again with thinner, stronger lines, silicone-coated lines, see-through waterproof fly boxes, line-to-leader "simple twist" connectors and pre-rigged systems. Scientific Anglers has also eliminated the use of lead in sinking lines, helping to protect our waterways. At the epicenter of the fly fishing world today, Scientific Anglers doesn't have to fish for compliments… they caught their limit a long, long time ago.

Scientific Anglers Concept 79 LA Disc Fly Fishing Reel

Tremendous Value
By GonzoVerified Reviewer from Galveston, TX on 11/06/2009
Pros:
Durable, Easy Casting, Reliable, Smooth Drag System, Smooth Reeling
Best Uses:
Fly Fishing
Describe Yourself:
Casual Fisher
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
As a fisherman of 60 years, I have no patience for fools who covet overpriced gear for status satisfaction. I am reminded of lures that are designed to catch fishermen, not fishes. This reel is a great value, teriffic bang for the buck. It has a large arbor, disc drag, and operates smoothly. You could pay hundreds more dollars for a reel, but I doubt you could get one much better. What more do you want? Caveat: Not good for suckers; you'll need a reel 20 times as expensive for that.

Considering learning to fly fish?

Comments:
I don't ski, I don't like winter. I needed something to keep those winter blues away, so I decided to take up fly fishing. This is a good quality outfit at a good price. It's well suited for trout, bass and I feel I could probably handle a fish up to 10 pounds. The reel does have a drag. It comes with backing, weight forward fly line, one 4x leader, rod and reel. The leader uses Sci Anglers connector that doesn't require a knot, but you can use any leader you want. No flies included. It would have been nice to have a few flies. It does come with a DVD that provides a nice introduction to fly fishing, knot tying, etc. I was choosing between this one and the Wild Water fly fishing kit and chose this one based on price. The Wild Water comes with a case, which is a nice addition and is probably a little higher quality. Anyway, this winter I can learn to tie flies while everyone else is on the slopes.

leaders - you run through a lot of them if you fish more than a few times every couple of months. So getting some at a great price means you can toss them (properly of course) and keep using a good performing new one. SA and Rio are the ones I look for.

This has to be the best value going. It's a great rod made even better by the price. Where else can you find such a deal. I bought 3 just to have a couple to give as gifts. Serria has the best price going. Nick Mississippi
