Actually, it is a shoe with a sewn-in gravel guard. The gravel guard has a vertical velcro closure that is hard to keep open while putting the shoes on.
I think the sole with both felt and rubber may be the answer to BWCA portages. I'll likely cut the gravel guards off.
They fit my 5E foot ok by ordering one size up.

He doesn't like high top shoes due to their rigidity and extra weight, and he doesn't want more rocks/sand/pebbles annoying and distracting him. These shoes are a rare design and fit all his fishing shoe needs- he hikes to inaccessible spots, so an all felt ain't great; when he gets there he jumps from rock to rock so the felt IS great. And they come in a large size. Even the sports store employees told me that few fish shoes fit young men of today with their size 14-17 feet. WAKE UP, manufacturers!!!!

Unlike other slides, there's no heel slap, and the footbeds relieve all my heel pain. These are about as comfortable and supportive as a sandal can be. I'm thinking of buying a second pair.
