Many of the rods that I have are four-piece and came with a tube to fit four pieces. Some of the rods that I have didn't come with a case at all!
I find it most convenient to break a four-piece rod at the center ferrule, leaving the rod strung and the reel in place, and stow it in the car when driving from one fishing location to another on a stream, or between streams where I fish. I save time, and the rod is safely stored in this manner.
