Celestron

The California-based Celestron optics company, with its wide offering of state-of-the-art optical technologies and a worldwide reputation for well-engineered products, designs and manufactures some of the highest-quality optical products out there. Celestron’s product line has expanded to include spotting scopes, binoculars, microscopes, optics cases and, of course, sophisticated telescopes for astronomy - many of them computerized. Celestron telescopes are the choice of major colleges, universities and research organizations; in fact, NASA selected the Celestron C5 telescope to be taken on several Space Shuttle missions. Celestron offers a range of optical products, from relatively simple binoculars and spotting scopes for hunting and wildlife watching to its advanced but popularly priced telescopes, such as the Celestron SkyScout personal planetarium. This computerized telescope identifies over 50,000 stars, planets and constellations from a built-in database and provides scientific information for each object.

C65 Scope - don't expect too much
By Herbert Fensterbenster - Runner/XC skier from Pikes Peak Region on 10/25/2009
Pros:
Strong Magnification
Cons:
Poorly Illuminated
Best Uses:
Bright Conditions, Shooting
Describe Yourself:
Avid Adventurer
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
The optics are fair at best, depth of focus and width of field seem constricted as does the dark image. But the main complaint is the flimsy plastic tripod which really needs to be beefed up. If I were the designer I might have also considered a small alignent feature as it is difficult to locate an object, and then with the flaky tripod and lock down even more difficult to keep the object centered.

Nicely packaged

Comments:
compact, but the focus ring was hard to turn, given the magnification the view kept shifting when you tried to focus. When I finally focused it, the view was not clear. I'm returning it today.

Bright Eyepiece
Best Uses:
Bright Conditions
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Comments:
I found this package to be a little limiting because of its lowest magnification. I needed something half of that. The product is of good quality for its price-range. Users who wish to use it for shooting might find the same issues I had; too narrow a field of view at 100yds / magnification too high. For birders, it may take some getting used to, to acquire your bird, focus and then try to re-acquire. No easy task. If your subject is across a lake, this is OK. Under 50ft, this is not so good. Astronomy, This too took some getting used to; star finding is an act of patience, a virtue I lack. I brought in the moons of Saturn, that was cool. Lunar landscape awesome. Of not, Celestron's coatings are good. the Red/Blue shift you sometimes see around the moon's perimeter in other optics is not seen here. All in all, I would recommend these to those who would need such things in light of my findings.

save your money
By stan the man from Seattle, WA on 09/21/2008
Pros:
Easy assembly, Stable tripod
Cons:
Difficult to Use, Flaky power connection, Inaccurate
Best Uses:
Moon only
Describe Yourself:
Casual/ Recreational
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Comments:
I received this thing, and it had obviously been returned by someone else. The box was beat up , the packaging shoddy, and it was partly put together. The tripod is pretty sturdy, but that's about the highlight. It was easy to put together, but I think that was mostly because someone else had done it and threw it back in the box. I assume this was originally priced at [$]for the computer components, because even with the high-power lens, you're not going to be "wowed" by even some lunar craters on a full-moon evening. The power cord between the battery pack and the motor fits very loosely and if you bump it slightly the computer disconnects and you have to reset the whole thing using an archaic user interface. Once I got the scope aligned, I tried finding objects. It never found anything on its own without me having to manually adjust it after it motors itself. Don't buy this for your kids or grandparents, or for yourself, unless you have the patience of Job. [...] I'd send it back in a second.

Pros:
Strong Magnification
Describe Yourself:

Comments:
Although the optics won't thrill the experienced user of a spotting scope, this unit is light and highly portable--almost as easy to pack and carry as a pair of binoculars.
