The small size and small fit works great for me - I wear a women's 2-4 in pants, and these are loose with a perfect waist. These are not a fashion statement - they are typical Gramicci function, but the longer cut and extra pockets beat out most of the women's styles. These are NOT "low rise" - enhances comfort but leave your shirt untucked. Regarding the buttons/fly - agree the button holes are tight, and I just moved the button up and over a 1/4 inch and that solved the exposed zipper issue. Bottom line: great price on a great quality short, pure function and comfort.
