I was hesitant on purchasing these boots because I could not find any information/reviews on them other than on AKU's website, but I took a risk and purchased after seeing other positive reviews of their hiking boots. First off, these are very robust, and are much larger than the Lowa Cevedale(non-i... Read More

I purchased a pair of Aku mountaineering boots after seeing a pair a coworker purchased for our job as wildland firefighters. I was impressed with the build quality and they fit our basic spec of having an 8" leather upper and Vibram soles. The price through Sierra TP was perfect as well. After a few days of hiking they are holding up well and are exactly what I was expecting in a well made Italian mountain boot.

Intended use; moderate ice climbing up to WI4 and alpine snow/mountaineering with some long approaches possible in the northern Rockies of USA. I've never worn AKU boots, so I ordered the boot in 3 different sizes, 8.5, 9 & 9.5. The size 9 fit the best, so I would say these fit as expected. But, I still returned all of them. I decided to go with a pair of Scarpa Mont Blanc Pro GTX that I purchased from another retailer at a similar price as these AKU's. I only wore the AKU's in the house. The AKU's are high quality, I believe them to be on par with the other major Italian-made boots. I've owned boots made by La Sportiva, Boreal, Lowa, etc. Bottom-line, I was wanting something that could handle long approaches that may or may not be on snow. The Scarpa Mont Blanc Pro GTX has all the cold-weather climbing abilities of the AKU, its lighter, and hikes absolutely awesome. The AKU boots had too much 'heal' for me, maybe not enough 'rocker' in the out sole for walking on trail. I think if these boots were used almost entirely on snow and ice they would probably walk comfortably.

These are some great boots. On the train now after climbing to the summit of the Breithorn in Switzerland. Crampons fit perfect and the stiffness was also really good. I appreciated the integrated gaiter since the snow was a bit slushy on the descent and was a bit thick in places. Lastly, these boots will keep your feet warm. We had temps in the -10s with strong wind gusts and my feet never felt chilled.

Sizing was a half size big for me. I tried on some AKU boots in a store before ordering from STP, so the fit was great for me.

These are well constructed Alpine boots that will excel in adverse conditions. I don't think they'd be suitable for long flat hikes since the soles are really stiff. But for Alpine environments, ice climbing, they are the ticket. Plus they're handmade in Italy and serialized so I know the quality is top notch.

Bought these in a size 10 (usually wear a size 9 1/2) and they fit like a glove. Very comfortable and needed no break in period. Bought a set of crampons which fit beautifully. These are awesome boots.

I just second "Josh the mountaineer" 's review, wonderful boot, super durable and inventive construction, warm.
except he said he'd be confident in their warmth down to -5 wind chill, i can attest to -9 wind chill with 1 thick pair of socks and i was still toasty. -20 and they'd be fine, without chemical heat. (for me at least, and i may have slightly warmer than average feet)
I also never got a chance to break them in, and they were superbly comfy, only a slight pressure point (not a hot spot) at the end of the day on the top of my foot, haven't identified the cause yet...
    anywho, i highly recommend these
