5.0 out of 5 stars. Super Light Approach Scramblers
Reviewed by Rocky from Boulder, CO on Thursday, March 5, 2015
These boots remind me of the venerable Kletterschuhe, a boot designed for easy rock climbing, scrambling, and boulder hopping. The boot is very light, 10 ounces lighter in the pair than my Asolo FSN85/95 boots in the same size (my closest comparison), but the sole is much stiffer than the Asolo boots. Several makers have come up with similar boots recently, intended as sort of "approach-scramblers," a useful description. Boots this stiff work well with strap-on crampons, but are miserable to wear downhill on good trails. They might be suitable for ultra light backpacking on rugged terrain (something I plan to try).
The upper is mostly fabric with a Goretex lining. AKU claims that most Goretex membranes are glued to the liner which destroys to their capacity to breathe, making the boots hot and wet to wear. They have developed a technology (Air 8000) that attaches the membrane with small spots of glue thus allowing it to breathe while remaining waterproof. This seems to work with my other AKU boots with the same technology. The boot has a knobby-lugged sole that seems more aggressive than most Vibram soles, the sort of sole you might want for broken rock and talus, not so much for groomed trails.
AKU sizes their boot differently than most European makers. My street shoe size 11.5 translates to a Euro size 46, my boot size, which other makers translate as a US size 12 (order your street shoe size). These boots are a snug fit out of the box wearing midweight hiking socks. I have lower volume feet with an AB width (as measured on a shoe store Brannock Device). There feels to be a little additional width, and lighter socks will offer a little more room but these boots are sized for narrow low volume feet.
These are specialized boots that fit a niche I've been looking to fill. They would be better named SL (Super Light?) Approach Scramblers.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great boots for strenuous hike

At first I thought the size run too small for my feet (I wear 9 1/2 US side and bought that size as suggested by customer service)...initially, it felt too small and didn't have much space for my toes but after about 2 months of heavy use in the hiking/trekking it started to fit perfectly. I guess it just take time for feet to break in to the boots. Now I am very content with it's durability and traction. Taking this to my Machu Picchu trek coming up.

A light weight hiking boot that is very well made and has great support. Breathable and waterproof and a very low price. A win, win, win.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent light-weight hiker

These boots are an excellent light-weight hiking boot, with top quality materials and workmanship. Fit is spot-on for me with regular weight socks, so if you prefer thicker hiking socks you may want to order one half size up. Soles are stiff but not overly so, probably best for hiking rather than backpacking. The Gortex waterproofing seems to work well, staying dry while allowing the boots to breathe. Little to no break in time. I liked them enough to buy an extra pair, couldn't turn down the sale price.
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars. Absolute Junk

I LOVE AKU. Like really love their boots. I started with the Spider and even picked up a pair of Terrealte boots. To say these are bombproof would be the understatement of the decade. I've had my Spiders for 10+ years and they look like I just took them out of the box. The Terrealte's are incredible. Warm as can be and again, so tough, always looks brand new.

So, I am on my 3rd pair of AKU summer boots. These fell apart almost immediately. Seams opened up. AKU has this nasty habit of putting too much fabric on the inside of the tongue in summer boots. These fabric bunches up and starts to cut into the top of your foot. It's really wild. I don't believe summer and winter AKUs are made in the same country. That's how stark the difference is between the styles.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. The best boots I own!!

Not often I write an unsolicited review, but these boots are so good, like slippers inside with support that comes close to a ski boot. The outer sole is also shaped in such a way the boot rolls forward and literally puts a spring in your step. For the price I paid (under $100) they are not to be missed!
