Toughest and most comfortable boots I've owned in 35 years of heavy duty boot abuse. Bought a pair nearly 9 years ago and they are still going strong. Unfortunately I did not look after them as well they looked after me, and allowed the lining leather to dry out and crack- my fault. Beyond that, not... Read More

Well made boots. Very stiff initially, but not as stiff as my Raichle's. Still in breaking in period and are extremely comfortable even for daily wear. Way better than the modern offering from most manufacturers with the molded and glued sole. A great multifunction boot. You won't be sorry for spending the money on these.

These are great heavy-duty boots. They are meant for mountaineering (not casual hiking). The heavy and stiff construction provide the best stability in tricky terrain and when carrying a heavy pack. I also used them in the snow: they insulate extremely well (with thick socks).

I have owned many pairs of Norwegian welt hiking boots over the years that I wear for working outdoors.

The sizing of the Alico Guide runs the same as the old Raichle line.

I have always required a size 9m in Italian made boots like the formerly available Dunham, Kinney and Thom McAn line of mountaineering boots.

I had to return the first pair in size 9m and go a half size larger.
The issue with the 9m was the opening of boots were a little small and the back of my foot was rubbing the rear of the boot fairly hard when taking the boots on and off.
I knew this would cause the leather to wear out prematurely.
The 9.5m fit much better but there is a little play in the heal unless I wear thick socks.

The Perwanger leather does appear to be of the same quality as the 3mm thick Gallusser leather used with the Raichle Ravines.

The height of the boot is a bit higher then I prefer.

I wish the Alico Summit boots were available with the 3mm thick Perwanger leather used in the Gudie model.

From my experience with these types of boots the thicker leather does hold up much better compared to those with thinner leathers.
This why I purchased the Gude and not the Summit model.

I purchased these Alico New Guide Mountaineering Boots as a replacement for my Alpina Roughout Mountaineering boots which expired about twenty years ago after a twenty year life. The only difference I have tot iced is that the Alpina boots were insulated and these are not. The Alico boots feel 'padded' which is different. Same heavy leather exterior. Same kid leather interior. Same Vibram sole. Same attention to detail in construction and stitching. They are stiff and heavy just like I remember with similar lace attachments and pattern. I fully expect these to last twenty years of constant wear under various use and conditions. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quality boot at a great price. Delivered on time in pristine condition as expected.

I've owned many pairs of this boot, and wear them for everyday footwear. I have flat feet and small ankles, and these boots provide the underfoot and ankle support that I need. I get them resoled as needed, but like keeping an extra new pair on hand. I love them when I have to walk a lot, especially on rugged terrain and for working in, but they are also great for walkin' the city miles. They are heavy and stiff, but that's what I like. They're not for everybody, but if you want a boot that will protect your feet for hiking, work, and lots of miles, this is the boot. They break in easy for me; I'm used to them and I can wear them right out of the box. Also, if you have to be on a ladder a lot, these boots will save your feet because of the strong and stiff support of the 3/4 steel shank. The pair I just bought has new lace loops near the toe, with ball bearing rollers to save wear on the laces and ease snugging them up. Great idea! Also they come with brown laces now, instead of the bright read ones (that I usually change out right away). Great price at STP!!

    • Answer best i can do is give you the differential for me, which you can likely translate: i wear a 12.5 nike, a 12.5 adidas, etc in running and most athletic shoes...i wore a 12 in alicos, HOWEVER, i live in Los Angeles which is warm and i wear a thin 'dress' sock with my hiking shoes...if i was to wear a thick hiking sock i would het a 12.5 size...so as long as you don't wear your running shoes tight, but rather with adequate room, i feel they should translate to your alico hiking boot size...but i cannot guarantee this. as a separate note, in most all brands of cowboy and western boots i take a size 11 to 11.5...if that helps. good luck, these are a great, if heavy old style, boot.

  • Question “Are your Alico New Guide Mountaineering Hiking Boots seconds?”
Asked on 2/7/2015 12:32:58 PM by Through Hiker from Wisconsin
    • Answer totally not seconds...these were newer than new, nothing of a defect or glitch, with all tags, etc...i got asuper price as i have on other boots at sierra but none of it has ever been a second.

    • Answer If you are asking, if my Alico boots are my second pair of Alico boots,no they are my first. However, my previous boot boots were of the same kind, hard leather mountaineering boots (Tyrol brand), which are not manufactured anymore. The good part is that my new Alico Mountaineering boots are far more comfortable and didn't need to be broken in. I wore them right away for a three hour hike on a steep partially snow covered trail and, I didn't experience any discomfort or soreness afterwards.
      Best regards!

  • Question “Was this boot designed for narrow, normal, or wide feet?”

    • Answer Narrow to normal. I have wide feet and had to have them stretched to accommodate my big and small toes.

  • Question “Was this boot designed for feet with low-, medium-, or high-arches?”
Asked on 9/27/2014 1:57:47 PM by Nevada Smith from Reno
    • Answer The insoles that comes with these boots are junk. Having high arches (amongst other foot issues) I use custom insoles with these boots and all of my footwear. That being said once these boots break in they fit my feet amazingly.
Answered on 9/27/2014 2:08:46 PM by squirrler from greater rocky mountain region
    • Answer The boot itself is constructed with virtually no arch. That being said, they provide an insole that has a medium arch. I believe this is the norm, they expect you to tune the fit with aftermarket insoles if the originals don't work. Superfeet make a nice selection, as do several other quality orthotic providers.
Answered on 9/27/2014 2:28:17 PM by Bob from Eastern Oregon
    • Answer Cannot make a firm statement on that question. Taking measurement with a Brannock Device (measures foot size) is the sure way to know. A trip to the shoe store for a measure is the sure way. I am in the USA, Canada and UK sizing is different.

I can say Alico boots are made true to sixe.

  • Question “what is the length of insole for US8?”
Asked on 2/4/2014 5:32:18 AM by TL from denmark
    • Answer The Alico is an extremely rugged boot!
But when you are in the mountainous terrain for 12 to 16 hours daily, you will need an insole insert
such as the one offered by Danner Boots. We have found that even a Dr. Scholls is a great asset.
If there is a trout stream anywhere near I always carry the flyrod. This means an occasional wet
feet. This is where the more expensive Dr. Scholl works best since they will dry out quickly.

By using the inserts I have never had a problem with the Alico insole. What I have noticed is that
without the inserts you will end up with sore and tired feet and legs by the end of the day. A good
insert and this usually never happens even in rocky terrain above timberline.

  • Question “What do they recommend for conditioning and waterproofing these boots?”
Asked on 12/5/2013 11:28:20 PM by Dridzz from California
    • Answer This item has a leather upper. You should use a product specifically designed for waterproofing leather. We have a line of Nikwax products, such as item 3097C that may interest you.

    • Answer They have the same sizing reference. I would say 11 2E for the sake you can always wear thicker socks if they are a bit large. But is the are too small there is nothing that can remedy that.
