Toughest and most comfortable boots I've owned in 35 years of heavy duty boot abuse. Bought a pair nearly 9 years ago and they are still going strong. Unfortunately I did not look after them as well they looked after me, and allowed the lining leather to dry out and crack- my fault. Beyond that, not... Read More

Excellent BOOTS not to be confused with the more common modern hiking slippers that are sold at most retail outlets these days.

I work on a farm and wear boots everyday, all day, to work in. In 2009 I was fed up with spending tons of money on "work boots" from various retailers and online sellers only to have them fall apart after half a year. So, after extensive research, I bought a pair of these beasts. I initially reviewed them on this site in 2009. This pair lasted just under 4 years and took every thing I put them through. I wore through 2 soles on them before I finally had to retire them. In January of 2013 I bought another pair and after a year they are still in great shape and ready for more. I highly recommend these boots for people who need something rugged and durable. Listed below are a few of my observations after logging five years in these boots.

-Plan on at least a month, and probably two, of wearing them everyday for break in. If you only wear them occasionally, then breaking in will take much longer. They are extremely stiff when first worn. I would only wear them for a half of a day at a time when I first got them because of this. DO NOT take these on a long hike or backpacking trip right out of the box or you will be miserable.

-Though I use these boots primarily for work, I am an avid backpacker and have used these boots for outdoor activities as well. They perform well as a backpacking boot, they give tons of support and stability. However, they are kind of heavy. If you are not doing any serious mountaineering, or prefer less strenuous trips, then I would look for something else.

-For maximum longevity, I treated these boots a couple of times a year, and tried to avoid excess water exposure. If I knew I would be out in the irrigation water checking sprinklers, I would change into my rubber boots. (Common sense, right?) However, if I were ever caught in the rain without other boots, the leather on these do okay at keeping water out.

I hope this review helps. Again, I have loved these boots for what I use them for. Highly recommended.

I've had a similar type of boot for 25 years, unfortunately they could'nt go any further. So, I opted for Alico New Guide boot and I'm not disappointed. They are exactly what I wanted. Perfect fit for my shoe size with some more toe room than my previous boots. I took them for a 3 miles uphill hike as soon as I got them and by the end no blisters or sore toes. Of course, if you have never had stiff boots like this it will take quite a bit of adaptation. They provide the right protection for your feet and excellent traction for mountain hikes and climbs.

  • Question “Are your Alico New Guide Mountaineering Hiking Boots seconds?”
Asked on 2/7/2015 12:32:58 PM by Through Hiker from Wisconsin
    • Answer totally not seconds...these were newer than new, nothing of a defect or glitch, with all tags, etc...i got asuper price as i have on other boots at sierra but none of it has ever been a second.
Answered on 2/7/2015 1:41:01 PM by johnnyjohnny from lake balboa, ca
    • Answer If you are asking, if my Alico boots are my second pair of Alico boots,no they are my first. However, my previous boot boots were of the same kind, hard leather mountaineering boots (Tyrol brand), which are not manufactured anymore. The good part is that my new Alico Mountaineering boots are far more comfortable and didn't need to be broken in. I wore them right away for a three hour hike on a steep partially snow covered trail and, I didn't experience any discomfort or soreness afterwards.
      Best regards!

    • Answer Thanks, all, but I really want to heat from someone who works at Sierra Trading Post. My understanding is that seconds may be packaged and tagged as new but may have a defect of some kind that may or may not be evident to the customer.

  • Question “Was this boot designed for narrow, normal, or wide feet?”

    • Answer Narrow to normal. I have wide feet and had to have them stretched to accommodate my big and small toes.

  • Question “Was this boot designed for feet with low-, medium-, or high-arches?”
Asked on 9/27/2014 1:57:47 PM by Jim from Reno
    • Answer The insoles that comes with these boots are junk. Having high arches (amongst other foot issues) I use custom insoles with these boots and all of my footwear. That being said once these boots break in they fit my feet amazingly.
Answered on 9/27/2014 2:08:46 PM by squirrler from greater rocky mountain region
    • Answer The boot itself is constructed with virtually no arch. That being said, they provide an insole that has a medium arch. I believe this is the norm, they expect you to tune the fit with aftermarket insoles if the originals don't work. Superfeet make a nice selection, as do several other quality orthotic providers.

    • Answer Cannot make a firm statement on that question. Taking measurement with a Brannock Device (measures foot size) is the sure way to know. A trip to the shoe store for a measure is the sure way. I am in the USA, Canada and UK sizing is different.

I can say Alico boots are made true to sixe.

  • Question “what is the length of insole for US8?”
Asked on 2/4/2014 5:32:18 AM by TL from denmark
    • Answer The Alico is an extremely rugged boot!
But when you are in the mountainous terrain for 12 to 16 hours daily, you will need an insole insert
such as the one offered by Danner Boots. We have found that even a Dr. Scholls is a great asset.
If there is a trout stream anywhere near I always carry the flyrod. This means an occasional wet
feet. This is where the more expensive Dr. Scholl works best since they will dry out quickly.

By using the inserts I have never had a problem with the Alico insole. What I have noticed is that
without the inserts you will end up with sore and tired feet and legs by the end of the day. A good
insert and this usually never happens even in rocky terrain above timberline.

  • Question “What do they recommend for conditioning and waterproofing these boots?”
Asked on 12/5/2013 11:28:20 PM by Dridzz from California
    • Answer This item has a leather upper. You should use a product specifically designed for waterproofing leather. We have a line of Nikwax products, such as item 3097C that may interest you.

    • Answer They have the same sizing reference. I would say 11 2E for the sake you can always wear thicker socks if they are a bit large. But is the are too small there is nothing that can remedy that.
