Closeouts. Nestled within the Alps, the Dolomites are known for jagged peaks and deep crevasses that have challenged the climber's craft for centuries. The Summit from Alico was handcrafted by artisans in this awe-inspiring region. Its one-piece oil-tanned leather upper was made to explore the tough terrain of rugged landscapes. Soft leather interior and moisture-wicking insole reduces friction and blisters.

  • Question “I have had 4 sets of boots that have lost their soles after about 5 years even after as few as 2 multiday trips. I attribute this to storage in hawaii, humidity etc. I am thinking that the rubber and glue degrades due to mold or just the humidity. the soles remain fine, but the rubber between and glue seems to just fall apart. Sooo I am looking for boots that wont do that. do these boots use glue or just welted on? if the glue degrades will affect the function. any advice or comments would be appreciated. thanks”
Asked on 10/23/2012 12:00:00 AM by Pojiboy from Honolulu, HI
    • Answer Greetings! All Alico boots use the Norwegian Welt design in their sole construction. This means the Vibram lug sole is sewn to the boot, as opposed to being glued. This allows the soles to be replaced easily when worn out. On the webpage, use the zoom function to get a good look at how the sole is stitched to the boot. They're the only kind I have used in 30+ years of professional work and hiking. In general, humidity there isn't extreme and shouldn't be a problem unless you wear them every day in the most un-hospitable areas of the islands. Like any other footwear, they will not last long if consistently wet. Aside from the effects that kind of harsh environment would have on the leather uppers of any boot worn daily and not allowed to dry, the only effect on the soles would be if the stitching rots; something that can be repaired by any competent cobbler/shoe repair shop. You may also want to consider boots with molded soles, which is not the same as glued.

  • Question “There are few sizes available in Medium width. When will STP have more stock of this fine boot?”
Asked on 9/28/2012 12:00:00 AM by Doug from Knoxville, TN
  • Question “How do these boots do in hot weather? Is it doable or totally misguided to wear them in the summer? Thanks”
Asked on 7/9/2012 12:00:00 AM by parker from nevada city
    • Answer I am a big fella (120kg) and wear these boots every day. I have worn them in the summer (30 degrees C) and find them comfortable. I just walked 15 miles yesterday and although my feet were sore after that, they soon recovered and are fine today.

  • Question “Hi, what are the exact measurements of the insoles for sizes 11.5 and 12 for the Alico Summit? Also, would a D width support a 4.25inch wide foot, or should I get a 'W' width? Hoping to ensure a correct fit before shipping.. Thanks so much!”
Asked on 6/25/2012 12:00:00 AM by Jeff from Australia
    • Answer Insole length for the size 11.5 is 11.5" and the 12 is 12 1/4". Since you may want to wear a thicker sock with this boot I would say a wide would work better for your foot.

  • Question “Are these boots water-resistant? For example, can you walk through a stream without water penetrating the boot?”
Asked on 5/15/2012 12:00:00 AM by Luke from Unknown
    • Answer The Alico Summit boots are water-resistant.
Answered on 5/17/2012 12:00:00 AM by Prod. Spec. Ryan from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer They do not have a GoreTex liner. Water CAN penetrate through the stitching. They are not intended to be waterproof. They can be "water resistant" if you make them that way. Sno-Seal is the answer. Lots of it. Order the quart can from their website. Follow their instructions. Make sure you use a fingertip to run a thick bead of the stuff around the welt and then melt it into the stitching with a hair dryer. If you do it right these boots will handle a brief wetting, but water will eventually get through if you wade in it long enough. (Which is true with GoreTex too, of course.) And if you avoid leather care products that are based on animal fats, such as saddle soap, neatsfoot oil or mink oil, the leather will remain breathable and will dry out more quickly overnight when you're on a backpacking trip. You don't want anything to penetrate the entire thickness of the leather and clog the pores. (That ruins GoreTex boots too. It can't work if the leather can't breathe.)

  • Question “The catalog page says the boots have "leather interiors." Someone posted specs under Q&A that said the interior is "brushed cambrelle or leather." On the chat, I was told the interior is "brushed leather." I've never heard of brushed leather as a lining for a backpacking boot. What I want is a glove leather lining. What's in this boot?”
Asked on 5/6/2012 12:00:00 AM by schoolmarm from Salida, CO
    • Answer Brushed leather is just another way of saying it doesn't have a "shiny" finish. If you can zoom in on the cuff it will give you a good idea of the type of leather inside the boot.
Answered on 5/10/2012 12:00:00 AM by Prod. Spec. Ryan from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer They have a smooth leather lining.
