• Answer These boots are all top quality leather uppers with "stitchdown" construction to the midsole. It is hard to be sure, but the midsole looks to be leather also. Tried and true , old style. These are my third pair. My foot has continued to grow and my old pairs became too short. These are the best hiking boots I have found. They have a stiff platform, more comfortable on rocky trails and provide great ankle support. I don't know specifics about the shank, but can say they don't allow much flexing when crossing rocky areas. I am able to stand on a pointed rock without having the least discomfort. They have a heavy duty Vibram lug sole and heel. I added a more arch supportive footbed as I have a high arch. I don't think you will be able to find a better made, heavy duty hiking boot. I am a repeat buyer and am very happy
