I now own and have used all three alico boots offered at sierra - Summit, Tahoe and Guide. I have hiked at least 200 miles in each style from steep to flat, soft to rocky, wet and dry. These boots were clearly made by very experienced professionals and the workmanship of these Italian cobblers is si... Read More

The Tahoe hiking boot from Alico is an excellent everyday hiker and boot. I used this boot regularly for almost two years before needing to get another pair. It is not the most durable boot, due mainly to the textile lining, and leather type this model offers. I used these boots hard and within two years I had worn a hole in the lining above my big toe and completely used up the Vibram sole. I decided to replace the boot instead of resoling due to the worn and beat up condition. It is possible with lighter use that a person could resole this boot. I used an oil based waterproofing agent on my boots and the leather eventually broke down, I was surprised by this, but as I said these boots got hard use in the woods and on the road as my motorcycle boot. I have just purchased another pair of this model boot, and I would again when this next pair wears out. For the price you are getting a solid, comfortable boot with minimal break in time, that looks good and does a fine job. Do not expect to have these boots forever. Buy the Alico New Guide if you want a more lasting boot, but be ready to break those in. Great boot, great price, thanks Sierra Trading.

I have owned a pair of these boots since 2006. I have worn them backpacking up Mt. Katahdin, through the Mahoosuc Notch, and over the White Mountains, as well as in the Wind River Range, and the Sierra Nevada in all kinds of weather. I just sent this pair out to be resoled, but ordered another pair to make sure I will always have a pair available because they are simply the best boots I have ever owned for backpacking in rough terrain.

This is the 4th pair of Alico Hiking boots I have purchased. They are comfortable from the first. I did have a problem with the sizing. I love that they are made of one single piece of leather, wrapped around, with no seams to wear or tear. These are now being discontinued, and I am very disappointed about losing this reliable hiking boot.

Men swear by these boots. Cannot beat in comfort, durability and style. Quality leather to last for years. Importantly, they come in wide, which is essential to many. Will take Alico over any other boot.

I've put in about 10 miles in these and they are just starting to feel broken in. The leather is beautiful and everything looks like it will wear well. The construction is similar to a pair of Vasque boots I bought in 1987 that never wore out...my feet grew.

I knocked off one star because the left boot was tight and high on the outside middle bone of my foot. I thought it might be my feet but don't really see a difference. If you feel this when you get the boots in I would send them back. The leather will eventually stretch but it will take a long time.

If you're tired of hikers that wear out after a few hundred miles give these a try

  • Question “are this boots waterproof or not some reviews say they are 100% waterproof while spec say non waterproof?”
Asked on 9/6/2014 2:55:31 PM by stan the worker from north carolina
    • Answer They are as water proof as full grain leather boot can be. They have a lining, but the lining is intended to wick not prevent moisture, like waterproof liners. That being said, I've treated them and they have stayed dry so far (day hikes and wooded geocaching).
Answered on 9/6/2014 3:40:54 PM by Hikeallegheny from Michigan
    • Answer Haven't gotten them wet yet, so I can't say.
Answered on 9/6/2014 3:56:23 PM by kds from nc
    • Answer These boots are water resistant oiled leather. Water resistant, not waterproof, they breathe better than waterproof with a membrane.
Answered on 9/6/2014 4:34:25 PM by GregL from NorCal
    • Answer I have not worn them in damp conditions. The tongue design would prevent water from filling the boot unless submerged. They are good boots.
Answered on 9/7/2014 9:27:16 AM by Tucson Kid from Tucson
    • Answer I have worn these boots regularly for around the past 12 years. I can't recall my feet or socks ever getting wet. However, the leather does not repel water, and the boots should be air dried, if the leather has soaked up much moisture.
Answered on 9/8/2014 9:18:54 AM by General Wear George from Florida
    • Answer If you wax them up they will be fairly water resistance but they do not have a Gore-Tex liner so eventually they will leak.

  • Question “About sizing, Are these boots sized like a work boot or a athletic shoe?”
Asked on 4/1/2014 7:10:19 AM by Glenn from California
    • Answer Not quite sure what you mean as I have never discerned a noticeable difference.
What I will say is that I have a rather wide foot and a high arch; these are the most
comfortable new boots I can ever remember finding. The fit is excellent and the
craftsmanship stellar. The only catch is that the 'break-in' is serious but that's easily
remedied with a few good long hikes or several days just wearing them. Worth the
effort and the price is incredible for handmade Italian hiking boots.
      Go for it!!!

    • Answer Like a work boot! The Alico Tahoe has quite a lot of interior volume. I tried a smaller size when I noticed the boot's volume, but chose the larger size for the length that I needed. To take up some volume, I purchased a pair of high quality insoles ("Sole" brand) and new medium thickness Smartwool hiking socks. The boots then benefit from a break-in period of a few day hikes. Also, check out the boot lacing pattern alternatives on this Sierra site. After break-in, I headed out backpacking overnight, with a good load of camera gear, traveling in very rugged Rocky Mountain terrain. The Alicos were in their element on this trip, and performed wonderfully -- supportive, comfortable, no hot spots, and good protection. Athletic shoe? No, although with the volume taken up as I described, these boots will have good overall contact as they continue to soften and mold to your feet. Athletic shoe? No. The Alicos are built with Norwegian welt outsole construction. A Salomon light hiker would be the athletic shoe comparable.

Asked on 9/15/2013 5:42:51 PM by jimbo from virginia
    • Answer Most conversion charts indicate a Euro 44 is a US 10, if you are wearing heavy hiking sock the 10.5 would be the choice.

    • Answer If you are intending to wear heavy socks then you would order 1/2 size larger.
Answered on 4/29/2013 2:02:47 PM by Prod. Spec. Kevin from Sierra Trading Post
    • Answer My feet measure 12 medium (D). I normally have to wear 13 shoes and in some cases 14 because my feet spread out under heavy load or after walking all day. I ordered the Alico Suimmit and the 12 Wide are good but just a touch too large with one pair of thick socks and with Superfeet Green insoles replacing the original Alico insoles. So from my perpective get your feet measured and just order that size, I think you should be OK with thick socks.

  • Question “What is a "D" width? In US sizing I wear a normal width. How does that compare?”
Asked on 12/28/2012 12:00:00 AM by none from NJ
    • Answer The d width is the same and a medium width. Which I am assuming you are describing as normal width.
