The quality and color of this skirt are gorgeous (the houndstooth checks are eye-poppingly (but not overwhelmingly) bigger than you usually see on houndstooth skirts. It is HIGH QUALITY WOOL BLEND and very soft. I almost wanted to put my face to it to use as a pillow.
Unfortunately, when I put on this baby, it dropped to my hips. I expected that but I also expected that when I zipped it up, this discrepancy would be fixed, but it wasn't. The skirt stayed at my hipbone-- not even somewhere above them, and the part that was supposed to hit my hip slid to my mid-thigh. The length dragged lower and baggier, which would've been unflattering on anyone, but especially was on my short hipless frame. A big part of the problem was that even once zipped, the top part was far too wide for even the smallest part of my body (which it should've fit easily, as I have a 28'' waist and the skirt's waist is 28.5'' (supposedly). But there wasn't even a belthole remotely close to where I needed one.
Part of this is definitely my fault, because seeing the houndstooth sold out in my true regular size of 8 (even here running big), I ordered the 10 (with 28.5 waist and 38.5 hip).
But it seems to me that the 8 (27.5'' waist, 37.5'' hips ) wouldn't have fit well either- definitely not in the hips. Not even close.
I learned that I really should be ordering skirts only in petite sizes, because my particular measurements don't reconcile together in a traditional size chart, be it one that runs smaller (like Asos) or larger (like here at the Sierra Trading Post) . I am returning the skirt, and I ordered a J.Crew petite one off of Ebay with measurements that suit me perfectly.
Reference: I am about 113 lb.s, 5'0'' tall, with 28'' waist and about 36'' (maybe 36.5'') hips.
I did notice, though, that Sierra Trading Post has fantastic service- free FAST shipping! (despite making the buyer pay return shipping), top-notch (comprehensive) & continuous communication, and they sent me multiple free coupons just for making this purchase.
My advice is to read the measurements carefully, consider the shape of the skirt around the hips, and watch for the waistline & possible belt problems.
I hope it fits for you :-]
Reviewed by Curvy Woman from Virginia on Thursday, December 5, 2013This is a great skirt, but is cut too narrow through the hips for curvy women. Great for someone who has no hips. I am by no means overweight but, most women, as a rule have hips and clothing designers should take this into account when creating straight skirts.
