Aston Umiat Alaska Sheepskin Hat (For Men)

Closeouts. Nothing beats a genuine shearling ear flap hat for keeping your noggin warm, and no one makes better sheepskin accessories than Aston. This Umiat Alaska sheepskin hat has a leather crown strap to secure flaps when not in use.

Hat is very well made. With flaps up it fits my head snugly, rides just above the ears but doesn't fall off. With flaps down it is extremely warm. Have only worn it in temperatures down in the 20s, but was impressed by how comfortable it felt on my head.

Is too tight, more like a medium. Also the flaps are short and leather ties too short. [*]

I ordered this Umiat as well as the Aviator hats for my husband. This is a nice hat; it's a classic Siberian "Rusalka" style. To stay warm on those cold wintery days, one lets the side flaps of the hat go down and snaps them under a chin - it's quite practical. From the two Aston styles I ordered, we kept the Aviator and returned this Umiat. We returned it for two reasons: (1) the Aviator has more of a style to it (but with a visor it's also more casual) and (2) the Umiat runs small. My husband's head is 7&1/8, medium, and this hat in size M was too small for him (it fit me perfectly – 6&7/8 size = S in women's sizes - I was actually considering keeping it for myself). We both found shearling to be of nice quality; it's a well-made hat. I hope that this review helps in your decision-making process.

Sending this back today, nominally because it is too small. Admittedly, my size (7-5/8) is at the high end of the listed definition of "XL," but this hat came nowhere near fitting me. Very, very small. This hat style has a high "goofiness" potential; wearing it perched on the crown of my head wouldn't help. All of that being said, I was also disappointed in the hat's overall quality. It was nowhere near as ... luxurious ... as it appeared in the catalogue. Very lightweight.

Ogther fur hats I've tried were bulky or looked like synthetic fur -- this one is compact and stylish -- not yet tried in cold weather.
