Over the last ten years, I've had to abandon two perfectly good bags because my laptop computers outgrew them. They had built-in laptop compartments, and all sorts of specialty compartments for floppy disks, modem cables, and so on. Well, of course, we've outgrown all that old stuff, so this time, I wanted a bag with an open design. This messenger bag from Australian Bag Outfitters fits the bill perfectly. It has just enough organization to hold my stuff, but it doesn't force me into a particular setup. Mind you, since it doesn't contain a dedicated laptop sleeve or compartment, you'll have to buy a separate sleeve. I did that for my new MacBook Pro 15" and it fits in just wonderfully, allowing room for additional items like the power supply, extension cord, and mouse. It then still has room for 2 really fat books, 4 chunky paperbacks or up to 8! thinner books.
Another nice feature of the bag which is sooo important to me is that it stands up regardless of what is in the bag. If it's just the laptop, or the laptop, accessories and a ton of books, the bag is always upright. Now, I have the leather version, so maybe the canvas ones don't stand up like this, but it's great that the leather is so stable.
I have one complaint, though: the bag contains no keychain dongle. It means I don't have a place to easily clip my keys for quick access. I throw them now either into the front zipper pocket or into the one of the smaller pockets up front that are meant for cell phones, etc. It's a pain having to burrow for them, though.
