Reviewed by OMF from Michigan on Tuesday, May 14, 2013Wish I would have read more of the reviews that gave less stars, which were conveniently hidden at the bottom when I went back and looked. I do like the taste of this product, we have purchased it many times before. The tile of the product is very misleading. There is definitely not enough food for 2 people for 3 days contained in this package. Normal people need around 2,000 calories a day, hikers need much more especially in colder weather. If you divide out the calories in this product you end up with 800-900 per person. It was very disappointing to find this out.

Reviewed by Bob 101 from NW Oregon on Tuesday, May 07, 2013I get these prepackaged meal packs every year or so to be used for quick meal plans for "unplanned" backpack trips. I use a meal pack for a 3 day hike when I have someone with me to share or I get 5-6 days with careful measuring to give myself 2 meals from a 2 person serving. This is not a complete meal pack to my way of thinking. What is missing: There is now trail mix or trail bars to munch on while you are hiking - be sure to pack these extra for yourself. There is no drink mix - be sure pack your own hot coco, coffee, tea, Gatorade, etc. As a side note: I am not a big fan of packaged dehydrated meals. I eat them because they are convenient, light weight, and fast. They frequently have more salt added to them than I like.

I was not expecting it to be this compact. I have only used it on solo day hikes and makes for a delicious hot lunch on the trail with a little hot water. when packing all of the packages can fit into less than half a plastic grocery bag. I have not tried all of the food but will be purchasing this kit again and with a good discount code it is very reasonably priced backpacking food. highly recommended!

Answer As of (January 2012) has all items dated for expiration at Nov or Dec 2014

Answer Expiration dates are listed on the package. Newly purchased these have a shelf life of 3 years so 2015. HOWEVER. They are required by law to approximate a safe shelf life to protect against legal and civil action. However in reality most properly freeze dried food can last (rehydrateable and safe to eat) 10 years. Do not throw these out simply because it is one month past expiration. For camping trips you may want fresher meals, however in a true EMERGENCY, can you really afford to be picky over a legally required expiration date?
