If bought individually this totals twice what I paid. I will use this for backpacking or to store in an emergency kit. Great value.

Two of the meals have expiration date of February 2012, a little more than a year from now... Dehydrated food generally has a shelf life of at least 3 years. Either this is inferior, unstable product, or it's been sitting around for a while... My guess is that some of the bags have been on the shelf for 2+ years, and some of the bags look like they've been around the block! Others seem fresher with expiration dates of 2013... It's still a lot of food, a decent deal if you can get it on sale... I wouldn't buy this as part of a long term storage plan, however...(get freeze-dried instead) I haven't tasted any of them, but have heard that the eggs are inedible, and the rest is just OK. Spring for MountainHouse or AlpineAire if you want the best tasting...

The meals can usually be prepared in their original foil bag and eaten out of the same bag. The bag must be packed out for disposal, as it is non-biodegradable. Unlike MREs, freeze-dried food requires preparation, does not heat itself, and requires water. This product can be used for emergencies or as a supplement to other campground foods. Because of the expense and the mediocre taste of some dishes, I'd use this product primarily where light weight and long shelf life are important.

For long (1-week plus) trip. Will supplement what we take for shorter trips. Kinda hard to pack into a bear canister though.

The only thing which is missing is a concession to the current fad of "health" food added to the package. My "giftee" said he would have preferred something "local" (to Wyoming?)and "fresh" (he had me stumped on this one, too)(maybe something in plastic bags). Any suggestions which would fit in the mesh bag would be entertained by me. I, for one, realize I don't have to eat this way always.
