    The compass housing on my unit was too tight against the needle. When I turned the housing the needle would turn and stick this led to inaccurate or untrustworthy readings.

    No, I would not recommend this to a friend
    This compass does not have fluid to steady the needle. The compass has to be held flat to get an accurate read. I didn't realize this at the time of purchase, but plan to keep the compass as a backup. Other than this shortcoming this is a standard base plate compass.
