I just totaled my Saab, while my 96-pound Weimaraner was in the back seat, wearing this Bergan harness. We both walked away without a scratch, he because of his harness.
At he outset, getting him into the harness was a wrestle. Now, when he sees it, he lifts first one leg, then the other.
I had to replace the nylon tether because it was an irresistible chew toy; I replaced it with a simple if heavyweight chain from True Value. Also, as Weimaraners have little chest and belly hair, the harness chafed him; I covered the inside of the harness with fleece from Joann's. Both accommodations were of little expense or difficulty.
MY DOG LIVES BECAUSE OF THIS BERGAN HARNESS. BUY IT. USE IT.

This harness is very sturdy. It just needed a small adjustment to fit my 80lb. GSD. I didn't cut off the excess on the strap, because he is 10 months old and still growing . The harness is easy to put on and quick to remove. He hasn't had any problem wearing this harness and it keeps him in the back seat. My dog can sit, lay down and turn around without getting tangled.

Well constructed, good design. I haven't tried it in the car yet but it seems like it should work well. (hence the 4 star rating) There is enough room for my mid-size albeit portly cow dog. I'm not wild about "camo" coloring but function is primary here.
I have not used the harness in the car but I can tell you there is a rather sturdy attachment site in the back at the top of the dogs shoulder for the caribiner strap which is about 30-36" long. Because of the attachment point the dog should be able to make a circle and either sit or lie down while being tethered. My car has a substantial metal loop attached to the car frame that I can connect to....I guess it depends on your vehicle. I purchased the harness with the intention of using it to let my dog pull me around on skiis...It appears that application should work! I think it's worth the investment.
